We had an inkling when Mr. & Mrs. Smith opened with Alexander Skarsgård and then unceremoniously disposed of him within the first three minutes: this show had serious guest star juice. By episode two, when Paul Dano casually dropped in as a passive-aggressive neighbor, a pattern had clearly emerged.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the 2024 Prime Video series (based loosely on Mr. & Mrs. Smith, the 2005 movie that launched Brangelina into the world), stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as John and Jane Smith. The two are matched together by a mysterious organization to start a new life in which they pose as a married pair of software engineers while actually working as assassins and handlers of otherwise unsavory, high-risk tasks.

Glover and Erskine serve as the emotional center of the story, and witnessing their relationship evolve is the one constant throughout. But in each episode, there’s also some new, unexpected high-wattage talent introduced, one of the many ways in which the show constantly winks at the viewer.

From a perverted John Turturro to a wimpy Ron Perlman, here’s the exhaustive guide to the most stacked guest star cast on TV.

Alexander Skarsgård and Eiza González as Other John and Jane — Episode 1

The show opens with Skarsgård and González as a preternaturally sexy couple hiding away in a shack in the middle of the woods. They’re also named John and Jane, and presumably on the run from their responsibilities. Despite their arsenal of weapons, they meet a quick end at the hands of two mysterious assassins. (Though if you’ve made it all the way through the series, you have a better idea of who—or, to be specific, which bob haircut—took them out.) This clears the way for the Glover and Erskine John-and-Jane pairing to take the stage.

Paul Dano as Hot Neighbor — Episodes 2 and 8

Mr. & Mrs. Smith has an inordinate amount of real estate porn, the center of which is the impeccable Manhattan brownstone where John and Jane get to live. Paul Dano—the king of quiet menace—shows up as their neighbor in episode two. While he does give off some creepy rival spy vibes (see: the quiet menace), he ultimately is just jealous of their renovation work and annoyed that their cat keeps getting in his yard. Nonetheless, Jane thinks he’s hot, hence his official character name.

John Turturro as Eric Shane — Episode 2

The second episode also finds John and Jane tasked with going to a silent auction, finding the person who bids the most on Andy Warhol’s “Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster),” administering a single dose of truth serum, and recording the results.

That high-roller turns out to be John Turturro, playing real estate mogul Eric Shane. Turturro, who is always great at playing the perv, is in fine form here as he makes John and Jane pretend to be dogs. Through a miscommunication, they end up both administering the truth serum, which leads to Shane ending up in their rooftop composter. (Again with the real estate!)

Sharon Horgan as Gavol Martin — Episode 3

Gavol: great name. Sharon Horgan: great guest star. (Hello to my fellow Catastrophe-heads.) Horgan plays Gavol Martin, a no-nonsense businesswoman with a net worth “the GDP of Australia.” In episode three, John and Jane follow her and her husband to a ski resort in the Italian Dolomites with the instructions to bug their room and phones. The general atmosphere is already deeply Force Majeure-esque—and that’s before Gavol gets kidnapped and her husband refuses the kidnappers’ demands.

Úrsula Corberó as Rooney — Episode 4

Money Heist hottie Úrsula Corberó briefly shows up as Rooney, John’s ex-girlfriend whom they run into at the farmer’s market in episode four.

Wagner Moura and Parker Posey as Other John and Jane —Episodes 4 and 8

But the more consequential run-in at the farmers’ market? Narcos star Wagner Moura and Gen X icon Parker Posey as Other John and Jane. They make fast couple friends with the younger John and Jane, who are enchanted by their charming older counterparts—and just as quickly disenchanted. And by the time Other John and Jane show up in episode eight, the disenchantment is more than warranted.

Ron Perlman as Toby — Episode 5

Ron Perlman.

Eternal tough guy Ron Perlman shows up in episode five, when John and Jane have to spirit his character, Toby, away to a safe house in Lake Como. That location’s been compromised, and things get violent, fast. Mr. & Mrs. Smith has Perlman playing way against type: he’s afraid of heights, refuses to take his medicine, constantly throws tantrums. We never do find out what it is that he does for a living, but that’s not important—Jane caring for him serves to open up a conversation between the couple about whether they want to have kids.

Sarah Paulson as the Therapist — Episode 6

Though the John and Jane couples’ therapy scenes do feel especially millennial, Brangelina also did their fair share of couples’ therapy in the 2005 version. Sarah Paulson really nails the floaty, quasi-hippie affect—and, even better, the mask that drops when her annoying clients leave and she can finally hit her vape.

Michaela Coel as Bev — Episode 7

Michaela Coel.
Michaela Coel.

Finally, the perennially cool I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel shows up as Bev, an artsy type with whom we’re to believe John is having an affair. Jane shows up with a gun and threatens her, and it’s thrillingly revealed that Bev is in fact a rival spy—and John and Jane’s eventual downfall.
