New Movies in 2021: All the Films We Can’t Wait to See This Year

The new movies in 2021 are just going to hit different. After spending the past year watching them from home because of quarantine, don't be surprised when you see people racing to enjoy films on 30-foot screens again. Oh, how I've missed loading up on overpriced snacks, settling into a leather recliner, and watching 25 minutes of trailers! I just want it back! 

It's like the movie gods heard our prayers because there are a ton of movies coming out this year that are worth the absurd price of a movie ticket these days. From No Time to Die to Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh, we are in for an incredible slate. 

Below, all the new movies in 2021 to mark on your calendars.

Zola (June 30)

The upcoming movie is based on the viral Twitter thread, and director Janicza Bravo will bring the story to the big screen. In case you forgot, the story focuses on Aziah Wells King, a.k.a. Zola. In the thread, King explained how she agreed to travel to Florida with a dancer named Stefani that she just met; also along for the trip were Stefani's boyfriend and “roommate.” What begins as a spontaneous “hoe trip" turns into a wild ride. In theaters.

The Forever Purge (July 2)

Yes, another Purge moving is hitting theaters this summer. I'm not sure who asked for this, but if you're looking for a good ole scary movie, then the story about a Mexican couple on the run from a drug cartel will hit the spot. In theaters.

Black Widow (July 9)

Natasha Romanoff (a.k.a. Black Widow a.k.a. Scarlett Johansson) is finally getting her own standalone movie, and it's costarring Florence Pugh, so you know it's going to be iconic. Watch as Natasha journeys back to Russia—in the period between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War—and meets her father (played by David Harbour). In theaters.

Snake Eyes (July 23)

A G.I. Joe spin-off about Snake Eyes, one of the most important members of the team. Henry Golding steps into the titular role, which he talks about with Jimmy Fallon in the clip, below. In theaters

Old (July 23)

If M. Night Shyamalan directs a movie, then you know it's going to be freaky. The Sixth Sense director delivers with his latest film based on the graphic novel, Sandcastle, by Pierre Oscar Lévy and Frederik Peeters. The movie is about a family's tropical vacation that takes a turn when everyone on the secluded beach begins to age rapidly—reducing their entire lives into a single day. In theaters.

The Green Knight (July 30)

Dev Patel portrays King Arthur's headstrong nephew as he embarks on a quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight. Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, and Sarita Choudhury also star in the medieval fantasy film. In theaters.

Nine Days (July 30)

Winston Duke and Zazzie Beetz lead the original story about a man (Duke) who interviews five unborn souls (Beetz is one of the souls) to determine which one can be given life on Earth. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2020, but the release was delayed due to COVID-19. In theaters.

Stillwater (July 30)

Matt Damon plays an American oil-rig worker, who travels to France to visit his estranged daughter (played by Abigail Breslin) in prison for a murder she claims she didn't commit. Even though he doesn't speak the language or understand the culture, his character is on a mission to get her exonerated. Think Taken only if the daughter would up in jail. In theaters.

The Suicide Squad (August 6)

Not to be confused with 2016's Suicide Squad, this new film further explores the diabolical adventures of Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and your other favorite villains. In theaters and HBO Max.

Don't Breathe 2 (August 13)

As if the first Don't Breathe movie wasn't creepy enough… The sequel returns with “the blind man” hiding out. He's been off the grid for several years, living in a cabin with a young orphan girl. When criminals kidnap the girl, the man must come out of hiding to save her. In theaters.

Respect (August 13)

R-E-S-P-E-C-T… Find out what it means to me! The only woman who could do justice to Aretha Frankin (Jennifer Hudson) wows in the biopic musical drama about the “Queen of Soul.” In theaters.

Candyman (August 27)

After some delays, this Nia DaCosta–directed horror film (a remake of the ’92 classic) is finally getting a release. What happens when you say “Candyman” five times in the mirror? I’ll give you a hint: It's terrifying. In theaters.

Dune (October 1)

Timothée Chalamet and Rebecca Ferguson lead this sci-fi epic directed by Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Arrival, and Sicario). In theaters and HBO Max. 

Top Gun: Maverick (November 19)

More than 30 years later, we're finally getting a Top Gun sequel, with Tom Cruise reprising his role. Of course, it's a grave injustice that Kelly McGillis wasn't asked back. She deserves her own sequel, damn it! In theaters
