  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have gifted King Charles a new horse named Noble.

  • The Mounties have traditionally given horses to the King’s predecessors, including the late Queen Elizabeth II.

  • King Charles has ridden several Mountie-gifted horses in the past.

As everyone at Windsor Palace awaits the official coronation of King Charles, there has also been another new addition to the Royal lineup, and quite a “noble” one at that.

According to an Instagram post from the Royal Family, there’s a new resident at the Royal Mews: “Meet Noble: a gift from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to The King.”

Noble is a seven-year-old black mare, who the post lists as “16.2 hands high” (roughly 5.4 feet for those of us across the pond). The Royal Family also notes that Noble was chosen for her “..athletic ability and calm demeanour,” and that she is a “...veteran of the RCMP’s Musical Ride and has participated in 90 public performances in 50 locations in Canada.”

Now, a horse is a horse, of course (of course). But this Canadian mare is actually part of a rich tradition more than a century old.

As noted by Royal.uk, Canada’s North-West Mounted Police were bestowed the Royal title by King Edward VII almost 120 years ago, in 1904, five monarchs prior to the current King Charles. The King’s predecessors have traditionally been gifted horses by the RCMP—particularly his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who received eight such gifts during her lengthy reign, which began in 1953 at a coronation attended by the RCMP. The first such horse was Burmese, gifted to Elizabeth in 1969, whom she rode for 18 years.

King Charles, in his former duties as the Prince of Wales, personally rode several of the horses gifted to his mother by the RCMP, including James (gifted in 1998) and George (gifted in 2009), both during Trooping the Colour. But Noble marks the first equine companion gifted by the RCMP to King Charles himself in his new role.
