Mountain Biker Makes Incredible Save In Front Of Race Crowd

The sport of mountain biking has exploded since the turn of the century thanks (in part) to the adoption of lift-served mountain biking parks at ski resorts across the country.

The videos below shows Dan Klein making an absolutely incredible save during his run at the NW Cup at Whitefish Mountain Resort, Montana, a popular ski resort located on the doorstep of Glacier National Park. Check out the clips below:

🏇 Save of the day!!! Ran out of talent and got loose at the end of an otherwise safe and uneventful race run. Rode the front wheel for what felt like FOREVER before finally touching down with just enough time to avoid a tree. Didn’t panic after getting bucked, but my helmet did come down over my eyes after landing making that next bit extra spicy 🌶️ —— ⚠️ There are two lines through this section, which is modified from last year. There was a large tree stump that has since been cut down to create a little jump where I got bucked. Rider’s left (which I take) is the “safer” option, absorb the jump and bounce through the roots. I needed to learn how to race the rider’s right line, which jumps off the stump and lands on the back side of a root ball, about 10’ later. Elo was doing this line smoothly, but I didn’t put in the effort to learn it. It’s more than a jump - you come in somewhat unsettled and then there’s a depression right before the takeoff, plus the landing is somewhat over to the right. Seemed like a risk I didn’t want to take, but ultimately I think it would have been safer at the speed I was carrying. I’ll focus on getting that next year! —— 💪 Stoked on a 4th place finish in Cat1 with a 2:51.15, that’s 5 seconds faster than last year and put me within touch of the podium despite several setbacks earlier in the week. Nipped the kids too - Elo with a 2:57 and Nory with a 2:59, PHEW! Time now to settle and regroup before NWCup at Silver Mountain —— 🎥 Brandon Hanenberg 🙏 —— #nwcup #downhillmtb #sundaysaves #racing

There's nothing like a little nose manual to get the blood pumping when you're flying full speed during a downhill mountain biking race!

It's actually unbelievable that he didn't crash spectacularly. Watch the first clip again. Klein couldn't have been more than a couple of degrees away from going head first over the handlebars.

There's luck, and then there's whatever Klein benefitted from. An act of God? Maybe?

Klein took 4th place in the age 40-49 section of the Pro/Cat 1 group.
