Mountain Bike Legend Reminisces On The Early Days Of Freeride

In the late 90’s, freeride mountain biking was a new sport. Riders had begun to build bigger drops and ride steeper terrain all while bike technology was on the rise.

Watch as Brett Tippie recounts his experience in the early freeride movement.

In this video, Tippie shreds some steep slopes in Kamloops. Back in 1999, freeride was just beginning. The first New World Disorder movie, often cited as the film that popularized freeride, would launch the next year.

Tippie said he had only recently started getting paid meaning he could stop working as a road paver to fund his riding. Different times!

Tippie and his buddies were known for their free-spirited nomadic life. Before everyone and their mom decided to travel the country in a bus or van, these guys were nomadic freeriders doing just that. See the trailer for Kranked, a movie documenting this below.

Though biking has come a long way when it comes to riders and bike technology, the ethos remains. Having fun with your friends on sketchy lines is what the sport is all about.
