In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert M. Pirsig writes:

“Sometimes it's a little better to travel than to arrive.”

That’s the philosophy – the spirit of adventure – propelling this surf edit below. Even today, with the world becoming smaller and smaller, there are still places where one can get off the beaten path, wander, get lost, and surf perfect, uncrowded waves.

The video is captioned as such:

“RIDING A TRAIL-BIKE SOLO ACROSS FAR EAST INDO!

“In August 2023, journalist and film-maker Tom de Souza began riding a trail-bike solo across the entire eastern Indonesian archipelago.

“He set out to search for uncrowded waves on epic adventure through a country steeped in mysticism and rich with human stories.

“In this episode, he spends a month in wild and mountainous West Sumbawa, hoping to score one of Indo's premier waves, and learning more of the ex-pats who live colorful lives out there on the fringes of society.”

Pretty rad that, even in 2023, you can still get off the grid, go off into the unknown, meet new people, get lost, find remote waves, and surf practically alone.

And by two wheels, too.

Pirsig also writes:

“In a car you're always in a compartment, and because you're used to it you don't realize that through that car window everything you see is just more TV. You're a passive observer and it is all moving by you boringly in a frame.

“On a cycle the frame is gone. You're completely in contact with it all. You're in the scene, not just watching it anymore, and the sense of presence is overwhelming.”
