Performances begin Friday for Asbury Park Theater Company's production of "The Mountaintop."

Set in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, the play is Katori Hall's fictional reimagining of what may have happened the night before Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.  A Broadway production opened in 2011 starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett.

On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was in Memphis to speak on behalf of sanitation workers who went on strike following the death of two workers crushed by a malfunctioning garbage truck. While there, he gave his famous "Mountaintop" speech. MLK then retired to room 306.

In Hall's play, MLK orders room service. Camae, a maid, delivers a cup of coffee to King. As promotional material says, "the rest of the night is better experienced than explained."
