Mother's Day craft event set for Saturday

May 9—Penny Candy Store in Live Oak will host a Mother's Day craft event on Saturday, allowing children to create handmade gifts for their moms.

According to store owner Lorrie Brummett, a variety of craft materials will be available for kids to make a gift in time for Mother's Day on Sunday. Kids will be able to paint, decorate or craft a variety of projects, including planters, bird houses, photo frames and sun catchers.

"I just thought that it would be so fun to have all these kids here early in the morning and give them a project to do. They can take it home to their mom, they can be proud, and they can be a part of this community," she said. "It's a lot of different crafts for a lot of different children. ... Just a lot of little things they can make that are personal for their mom and they can use their creativity."

In addition to the craft event, Brummett has been arranging candy baskets for sale, including sugar-free options for diabetics. A drawing will also be held on Saturday for a chance to win a self-care gift basket featuring spa items, chocolates and a candle.

Brummett said that it was her experience as a mother of three that made her want to organize the event and ensure that mothers in the area were given a chance to be celebrated.

"I raised three children by myself. Mother's Day came and went. I wanted to do something for the young mothers here. Not all of them have a partner who can make sure that they get something for Mother's Day. What better way to bring our community together than to bring the children and their mothers involved?" Brummett said.

Saturday's event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. It is free to participate and open to children age 12 and under.

Families must register for the event by either calling Penny Candy Store at 530-695-1927 or visiting the store at 10221 Live Oak Blvd. in Live Oak. Families can also earn a ticket for the gift basket drawing by purchasing something from the store, Brummett said.
