The world saw some especially shocking celebrity breakups in 2022. From long-term couples to new pairs we were rooting for, the year brought some especially surprising relationship endings!

What a way to begin the year! When Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet announced their divorce in January of 2022, people were shook. The couple had been together almost 20 years and were married since 2017. The pair, who share two children, announced their separation in a joint statement that read in part:

“And so We share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage. We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy but so that as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty.”

Another casualty of January 2022, Pamela Anderson and bodyguard-turned-husband Dan Hayhurst announced they were divorcing after only a year of marriage. The couple, who married on Christmas Eve in 2020, was apparently one of the pandemic romances that just petered out. This is Anderson’s fifth divorce.

Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund

January saw a number of breakups, including the end of the almost three-year relationship between Emma Roberts and Garrett Hedlund. The couple, who welcomed their son Rhodes in December 2020, were first spotted together in March 2019.

Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian

Maurissa Gunn and Riley Christian, a pair who got immediately hot and heavy when they met on Bachelor in Paradise in 2021, made history as the first black couple to get engaged on BiP. Unfortunately, their love was not meant to last as the duo announced their breakup early on in 2022.

Hoda Kotb and Joel Schiffman

Hoda Kotb and Joel Schiffman called off their engagement after eight years together in late January of 2022. After first being spotted together in July 2021, Olivia Rodrigo and Adam Faze didn’t quite announce their breakup as much as they just stopped appearing in public together and let everyone figure it out. Their split was confirmed in February 2022.

Valerie Bertinelli and Tom Vitale also ended their marriage in 2022 after 10 years. They couple had dated for six years prior to their 2010 engagement and were married on New Year’s Day in 2011.

Trevor Noah and Minka Kelly
