Oh, Hollywood couples, they’re just like us—only with bigger engagement rings. The glitz and glam of stardom is enough to make any A-list relationship shine bright, but some romances go beyond that and capture the whole world in their orbit. Here are the biggest “It” couples over the past 50 years, starting in 1973.

This couple caused quite the stir in the early ‘70s when actress MacGraw left her producer husband to shack up with McQueen. The two co-starred in 1971’s The Getaway, were married in ‘73 and split in ‘77. McQueen would die just three years later from liver cancer.

These star-studded actors met in 1973 at Nicholson’s birthday party. They would be together on-and-off for 17 years. America watched on as Nicholson lavished Huston with extravagant gifts (he reportedly gave her an elephant at one point) and pet names. Unfortunately, he was also notoriously unfaithful.
In 1989, the relationship ended when Nicholson divulged that his mistress was pregnant. Huston said in 2019 that her biggest pet peeve during the relationship was “that he wasn’t as obsessed with me as I was with him.”

Cher, then 29 years old, made a big splash in ‘75 when she married rockstar Gregg Allman just three days after her divorce from Sonny Bono. Then, nine days later, she filed to dissolve her new marriage—although the couple later reconciled before actually divorcing in 1979.

Hawn and Hudson were an acting duo whose legacy—daughter Kate Hudson and son Oliver Hudson, both actors—is more famous than their own union. They married in 1976 and stayed together until 1982, after which Hudson was, in Hawn’s words, an “absentee father.”

Field and Reynolds met on the set of Smokey and the Bandit and their co-star relationship quickly turned into a real one. While they only dated for five years, on and off, Reynolds would tell Vanity Fair in 2015 that Field was “the love of my life.”
In her memoir, released shortly after Reynolds' death, Field said, “We were a perfect match of flaws.” She told Closer Weekly, “He asked me to marry him many times, [but] I knew his heart wasn’t in it. We’d have ended up just feeling terrible.”

Although actors Eastwood and Locke were both married when they met on set of The Outlaw Josey Wales in 1975, that didn’t stop a romance from blossoming. Their affair became public in 1978, the same year they starred in Every Which Way But Loose. The couple went on to film six movies together before breaking up in 1989. The split was made especially infamous when Locke sued Eastwood for palimony and accused him of abuse (Eastwood denied the accusations).

Martin and Peters first crossed paths in 1977 through Martin’s agent, then again at Kenny Rogers’ celebrity softball league, and then again on the game show Hollywood Squares. In 1980, Simmons and Ross both dominated the charts as singers but were an unlikely match—one a controversial, face-painted rocker and the other an R&B icon. The two met in 1979 through Cher, who was dating Simmons at the time, and broke up in 1984. In a royal wedding for the ages, Prince Charles wed Lady Diana Spencer on July 29, 1981, to great fanfare. They had been introduced in 1977, but it took another three years for them to re-meet and begin dating.
Of course, their 15-year union was famously rife with unhappiness, as Diana described her wedding day as “the worst day of [her] life." The pair separated in 1992 and were divorced in 1996, one year before Princess Diana would die tragically in a car crash.

The Taxi and Cheers stars started dating in 1971 and got married in January 1982. After a long marriage that included three children, DeVito and Perlman separated in 2012; they reconciled but separated again in 2017.
Strangely enough, the couple remains married: “We are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us,” Perlman said in an episode of Wiser Than Me, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ podcast.

Simon, a famous singer, met Fisher, Star Wars actress and daughter of Debbie Reynolds, in 1978. So commenced a tumultuous 12-year, on-again-off-again coupling. They broke up in June 1983, married in August, and reportedly fought on their honeymoon. Not even a year later, they were divorced.
What ended it for good? A trip to the Amazon in 1990, apparently. Fisher and Simon drank a psychedelic tea which revealed to Fisher that she no longer wanted to be “pinned beneath Paul's ever-spinning, ever-controlling brain."

Actors SJP and RDJ met and began dating when they were both 18 years old on the set of 1984’s Firstborn. According to People, they moved in together eight weeks later, a speedy timeline that can only look normal in Hollywood. In 1991, the couple separated, mainly due to Downey’s substance abuse.
In 2008, Robert told Parade, “I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is. She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn’t get my act together.”

Madonna and Sean Penn met on the set of her 1985 “Material Girl” music video and married six months later. They often made headlines over Penn’s jealousy, like in April 1986, when the actor attacked a man for speaking to her. In December of ‘97, Madonna filed for divorce.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver were a true power couple for decades, meeting in 1977 and marrying in ‘86. Shriver, a journalist and member of the iconic Kennedy family, was a great match for Schwarzenegger’s acting fame. They had four children and were rock-solid through the actor’s campaign for California governor in 2003. But they would separate in 2011 and later divorce when Schwarzenegger’s ‘90s affair and subsequent child were revealed.

Hawn’s second appearance on this list is much sweeter than the first. She and actor Kurt Russell first met on set in 1966. "I was 21 and he was 16 and I thought he was adorable but he was much too young," she told Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4. "And then years later we met up again and I liked him and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. But we both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell."
In 1983, they reconnected and started dating. They had a son together in ‘86 and co-starred in the hit rom-com Overboard in ‘87. The couple—unmarried but unbothered by it—are still going strong four decades later.

Johnson and Griffith met in 1972 on set, when Griffith was just 14 and Johnson 22. They moved in together a year later and got engaged on her 18th birthday, marrying in 1976. But that was just the first marriage.
After divorcing six months later, both actors went on to date/marry other people and have children with them before getting back together. Johnson and Griffith remarried in ‘89 and had daughter Dakota Johnson (of Fifty Shades of Grey fame). They split for the last time in ‘94.

This whirlwind romance is cemented in the memory of anyone who was alive in the ‘90s (although it's of course not Depp's most headline-grabbing relationship to date). The two met at a movie premiere in 1989, when Ryder was just 18 and Depp was 27, and got engaged five months later.

Pretty Woman actor Richard Gere and supermodel Cindy Crawford married in 1991 – a true Vegas wedding with aluminum foil rings. Spontaneous as the ceremony was, it held for four years before the couple separated in 1995.
Crawford, who was 25 to Gere’s 42 at the time of their wedding, talked about the marriage in a 2016 podcast episode with Marc Maron. "I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things but I don't know if we were ever friends – like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere,” she said.

Pop superstar Whitney Houston and R&B/hip-hop artist Bobby Brown met in 1989. After declining his first marriage proposal, Houston went on to marry Brown in 1992 and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, was born the following year.
It later became clear the relationship was a turbulent one, as Brown was arrested multiple times on different counts and at one point charged for hitting Houston. At the time, Houston was battling drug addiction and went to rehab twice. The couple divorced in 2007.
Glam rockstar David Bowie met supermodel Iman in 1990 at a dinner party, where it was love at first sight. In a 2000 interview with Hello!, he said he couldn’t sleep before their first date. “That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal. I'd never gone after anything…with such passion in all my life,” Bowie recalled.
They married in 1992 and were together until Bowie’s death from cancer in 2016. Iman has stated that she has no wish to remarry and still refers to Bowie as her husband.

An It boy of the ‘90s himself, Depp appears on this list multiple times. He dated model Kate Moss very publicly from 1994 to 1997, with more than their fair share of red carpet photos to show for it.
In 2022, Moss took the stand at Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial, dispelling the rumor that he pushed Moss down the stairs.

In 1995, Baywatch actress Pam Anderson and Mötley Crüe rocker Tommy Lee made headlines when they married after knowing each other for four days. Unsurprisingly, their relationship remained in the public eye through numerous scandals, including a leaked sex tape.
Though they split in ‘98, the couple were on and off for the next decade. In her recent Netflix documentary, Pamela, a Love Story, Anderson said, "I don't think I've ever loved anybody else.”

This genetically blessed couple met in 1992, when Bessette was working as a publicist at Calvin Klein and Kennedy was in a relationship with actress Daryl Hannah. It wasn’t until 1994 that they got together, although they became inseparable at that point and married in a secret ceremony in 1996.

Paltrow and Affleck began dating after co-starring in the critically acclaimed movie Shakespeare in Love. Friends actress Cox and actor Arquette met on the set of the first Scream movie in 1996. In September 1998, they got engaged, and were married in June the next year. The couple stayed together until 2010, when they publicly separated, and divorced in 2012 despite attempts to reconcile.
In recent years, both Cox and Arquette have spoken fondly of each other in interviews and even acted together in another Scream sequel.

Another instance of love at first sight, the Beckhams met in 1997 in the Manchester United players’ lounge, at the height of Victoria’s fame as a Spice Girl. The singer and soccer star were engaged in 1998, married in ‘99, and are still together to this day, with four children to show for it.

Aniston and Pitt met through their managers in 1994, and at first the relationship was strictly platonic. But after Aniston split from actor Tate Donovan and Pitt separated from Gwyneth Paltrow, they began secretly dating in 1998. In 1999, the ultra-famous actors made their red-carpet debut; and in 2000, they had a million-dollar Malibu beach wedding, complete with a 13-minute fireworks display.
But as it goes in Hollywood, their breakup made the bigger boom. The couple separated in 2005, and though they tried to keep the reasoning under wraps, it later came out that Pitt had fallen for Angelina Jolie, his co-star in Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Still, he attended Aniston’s 50th birthday party in 2019, and it seems the two remain friends.

Though Timberlake and Spears started dating in 1998, they reached power couple status in the early 2000s as their music careers really took off. They originally met on the set of The Mickey Mouse Club as children. Burning hot and bright, their flame died when the pair split in 2002.

Bennifer, as fans lovingly dubbed them, kicked off in 2002 on the set of their movie Gigli. "I really felt like when I met Ben, 'OK this is it,’” she told People in 2016 (nevermind that she was married at the time).
Despite being engaged and generally adored by the public, the couple postponed their wedding in late 2003 and eventually broke up in January 2004. The severe media attention, Affleck later said, played a role in the breakup.

These music icons met in 2000, when Beyoncé was just 18 and Jay-Z was 30, and reportedly started a relationship a year later. In 2003, Jay-Z was featured in Bey’s Crazy in Love, and though they had made no formal dating announcement, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion to fans.

Bieber, a musical sensation, and Gomez, a child TV star and singer, first met as young teens in 2009 after Bieber admitted he had a crush on the actress. They began a relationship the following year and publicly debuted as a couple in 2011.

Actress Megan Fox and musician Machine Gun Kelly may be better placed on a “weirdest celebrity couples” list, but you can't argue that they absolutely dominated headlines in 2020 with their new relationship. They met on set that year and began dating shortly thereafter, with Fox appearing in Kelly’s music video for the song Bloody Valentine.
Most of the fanfare around their coupling was about the passionate/bizarre comments Fox and Kelly made in interviews, sparking rumors that the relationship was a PR stunt. After Lopez’s split with Rodriguez, she rekindled her romance with former fiancé Ben Affleck. Though the pair had been broken up since 2004, they always remained supportive of each others’ lives and careers. In April 2021, photos began surfacing of Lopez and Affleck spending time together, and by July they were officially an item (again). They got married in July 2022.
In a personal newsletter to fans, Lopez wrote, “It's a beautiful outcome that this has happened in this way at this time in our lives where we can really appreciate and celebrate each other and respect each other. We always did, but we have even more of an appreciation because we know that life can take you in different directions."
