Summer dining is done best when it comes with a side of fresh air, so it’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for outdoor dining more than ever before. According to OpenTable, the demand for eating outdoors rose 19 percent in the first half of June, compared to the same period last year.

To lean into the demand, the restaurant tech company just released a report — Most Popular Restaurants for Outdoor Dining in America: 2023 Edition — after analyzing more than 13 million reviews on its site. (To come up with its annual list, OpenTable looked at diner reviews between May 1, 2022, and April 30, 2023, considering all reviews with a minimum overall score, which included diner rating, user clout, total number of reviews, and regional ratings.)

"With many restaurants elevating outdoor dining spaces for summer and beyond, this list represents dining destinations with incredible outdoor — and culinary — offerings,” Susan Lee, OpenTable’s chief growth officer, said in a release obtained by Travel + Leisure.

The Top 100 list spans 20 states across the country, with most picks concentrated in warm-weather destinations. California came out on top with 31 restaurants, including Dana Point’s Coastal Kitchen; Orange’s King's Fish House; Palm Springs’ Spencer's Restaurant; and Cardiff-by-the-Sea’s Pacific Coast Grill.

Florida followed with 17 eateries, including Celebration's Columbia Restaurant; Sarasota’s The Rosemary & Thyme; and Lake Buena Vista’s Raglan Road Irish Pub. Hawaii came in third with 10 spots, like Honolulu’s House Without A Key; Lahaina’s Mala Ocean Tavern; and Paia’s Mama's Fish House on Maui.

The nation’s smallest state, Rhode Island, also had a strong showing with four restaurants in different cities: Tiverton’s Boat House Waterfront Dining; Providence’s Los Andes Restaurant; Narragansett’s The Coast Guard House; and Newport’s The Lawn at Castle Hill Inn.

This year’s list included many returning favorites from last year’s list, such as New York City’s Cafe Luxembourg; Los Angeles' Bacari Silverlake; San Francisco’s Foreign Cinema; Napa, California's Bistro Don Giovanni; San Diego’s C-Level; Arlington, Virginia's Ruthie's All-Day; and Tampa, Florida’s Ulele. First-timers making the cut include Yountville, California’s Bistro Jeanty; Santa Fe, New Mexico's Izanami; and Honolulu’s Orchids at Halekulani.
