The Most Popular Halloween Costumes of 2019 Include ‘It,’ ‘Descendants’

If you’re afraid of killer clowns who live in sewers, it’s best you stay inside this Halloween season. Google rolled out its most-searched-for Halloween costume generator, Frightgeist, leading up to the holiday, and it may come as no surprise that costumes inspired by Stephen King’s “It” are going to be the hottest thing this spooky season.

The 25 Most Popular Halloween Candies in America

“It” topped the list of Google’s Halloween costume search interests for the month of September, most likely inspired by the recent release of “It Chapter Two” in theaters. A quick search for “It Halloween costumes” reveals dozens of truly terrifying Pennywise the Clown costumes, though of course there are versions of sexy Pennywise and children’s Pennywise costumes. If you’re looking to make your “It” Halloween costume a couple’s costume, results also come up for Georgie, the little boy killed in the first blockbuster installment of the rebooted franchise. To complete your Georgie costume, wear a yellow raincoat and carry a little paper sailboat and red balloon.

While the most-searched for Halloween costume for 2019 plays into a current pop culture phenomenon, many of the most popular costumes are seasonal classics. Witch (No. 2), Spider-Man (No. 3), dinosaur (No. 4), clown (No. 6) and mouse (No. 14) all made the list. Other pop culture fads in the top 15 most searched costumes include Disney’s “Descendants” (No. 5), “Fortnite” (No. 7), Chucky (No. 8) and “Stranger Things” (No. 13).

“Descendants” also topped Google’s list for the most searched group costumes, followed by “Fortnite,” “Stranger Things,” the 1980s and “Toy Story.” Other popular costumes include couple costumes inspired by “Lilo & Stitch,” Bonnie and Clyde, and Cosmo and Wanda from the nostalgic Nickelodeon cartoon “The Fairly Oddparents.”

If you’re looking to fit in or stand out this October, it’s good to know what other people will be wearing this Halloween, especially in your area. While “It,” “Descendants” and “Lilo & Stitch” are sure to be everywhere, these costumes can vary by region; find out the most popular Halloween costume in your state.
