Most Popular Dog Names for 2023 Includes Some True Gems

As someone who writes about pets for a living, I get to virtually "meet" a lot of dogs. There are definitely some dog names that have been more popular over the years--looking at you, Charlie-- but it's so much fun to hear the unique names too. Even so, I've been wondering what the most popular dog names are, because these patterns can't be mere coincidences. And sure enough, I was right!

U.S. News released its annual list of the year's most popular dog names, and I'm not surprised by the results one bit. But I was pleasantly surprised by the way We Rate Dogs made a video of the list so entertaining. They went as far as to guess what each dog name would look like, on average, and their estimates are pretty spot on.

These are the most popular dog names in 2023:

Of course, Bella was the top dog name of the year! I feel like I've been hearing it more and more, and I've heard from multiple vet techs who feel the same way. What I'm more impressed by is the accuracy of `the most popular dog name by state. Out here on the West Coast, I know at least four canine Lunas, and one person!

Have you ever met another pup who shares your dog's name? That didn't happen to me until my fiancé's dog, Jack, came into my life a few years ago (now he's my dog, too), but it's always fun to run into other Jacks or Jackies. For a while, one of our neighbors even had a Jack Russell Terrier named Jack!

When it comes to my senior rescue dog, though, I've never personally met another dog with his name. I named him Carter all the way back in 2011 when my family rescued him, but the only other Carter I've seen have been pups on social media or television. Believe it or not--there's a blonde cockapoo who looks just like my boy--but acts the opposite-- on an animated TV show called Housebroken. But when it comes to meeting dogs in-person, I've never met another Carter! His name isn't even in the top 100 most popular names, so I'm not all that surprised.
