Most popular baby names in South Carolina in 2023: See top 10 lists for boys, girls, US

According to reports from the Social Security Administration, the baby names chosen most often by South Carolina parents don't line up with the most popular names in the country for 2023.

S.C. also has plenty of fluctuation year-to-year, with no top baby name in the past five years holding the spot for longer than three consecutive years. Here are the names S.C. parents loved in 2023.

Most popular baby names in South Carolina 2023

Noah and Olivia were the most popular baby names for the year in S.C., according to data from the SSA. Olivia has topped the list before, losing the spot to Charlotte in 2022 and Ava in 2020. The name Liam has been at the top of the list for two years now, after replacing William as the top name in 2022.

Hudson and Lucas moved into the top 10 in 2023. Hudson was 23rd in 2022, and Lucas was 12th. Charles dropped from ninth in 2022 to 25th in 2023. Asher was No. 10 in 2022 but fell to No. 23 in 2023.

Nova moved into the top 10 after having been the 12th most popular girls name in 2022. Isabella, meanwhile, dropped from eighth in 2022 to 12th in 2023.

Top boys and girls names in the US in 2023

There were some differences between S.C.'s choices and the nation's, with two names on the boys list -- Hudson and John -- that didn't make it into the countrywide top 10, and three more on the girl list -- Elizabeth, Harper and Nova.

Liam and Olivia topped the countrywide list for the fifth year in a row, and one new name, Mateo, made it into the top 10 this year, climbing from 11th to sixth place from 2022 and 2023.

Another page from the SSA lists baby names that have increased the most in popularity from one year to another. According to previous reporting from the USA TODAY network, the SSA says that many of these trending names seem to take influence from social media.

Examples of possible inspirations for top names in this category included YouTube and Tiktok influencer Kaeli McEwen or Kaeli Mae and TikTok creator Wyatt Eiden. Here's the list of fastest rising baby names in 2023, according to the SSA.
