As holiday travel begins to pick up and you find yourself constantly on the move (and, more often than not, in a rush), the last thing you want is to be uncomfortable or distracted by what you're wearing. That's why "airport style" has become synonymous with clothing that's cozy and uncomplicated: athleisure, leggings, joggers, sweatpants, sweatshirts.

Even jet-setting celebrities, who expect to be photographed coming in and out of the airport, have embraced the look. While there are still plenty of travelers—famous or not—who arrive to their gate dressed to the nines, you'll likely come across more sweatsuits at boarding than anywhere else. What this particular type of dressing, celebrity or otherwise, teaches us is that wearing your most comfortable pants to travel doesn't necessarily mean you have to look like you went straight from a weekend-long Netflix marathon on your couch to Terminal A.

Celebrities will pair cozy elements with tailored blazers, statement outerwear, designer bags, and other pieces that elevate the whole outfit. For instance, Rihanna turned a pair of white drawstring sweatpants into the foundation for a monochromatic look, topping it with a loose-fit tank, denim jacket, and teddy coat in similar hues.

Sure, their fashion credentials have been hotly debated over the years, but sweatpants are still the item we reach for when we just want to be comfortable. And that's certainly true during holiday travel. Sweatpants-adjacent bottoms, though, like slim-fit joggers are a nice alternative if you want something more polished. Take it from Zendaya, who wore a pair with a more structured blazer-moto jacket hybrid as she arrived for a flight.

As athleisure really took off among fashion fans, there was also a wave of nostalgia-fueled trends reintroducing themselves into our wardrobes. That's how track pants became a popular comfortable style among the celebrity set, particularly for travel. Adriana Lime styled hers with a blazer and a tight cross-body bag across her torso.

Another major runway trend that lends itself to airport style? Bike shorts. We've seen them styled with diamonds, with designer sneakers, with color-blocked coats.... Kim Kardashian West even wore them to the airport, with an oversized T-shirt and chunky sneakers, making yet another case for their versatility.
