The most awkward celebrity moments of 2020

From Cosmopolitan

Seeing as we've spent 90% of this year inside and, er, not had much going on, you'd have thought the celebrities of this world would be spared of all awkward moments. Right?

Wrong. Because despite events being cancelled left, right and centre and famous people, like every one else, being confined to their homes, they still managed to do some cringy things to make us laugh.

And that's not forgetting the fact there were some big fancy events at the beginning of the year, like the Oscars and the Brit awards. So let's look back at some of the most awkward moments of 2020, and remind ourselves of what life can be like when it's normal. Shall we?

1. When Jason Bateman's name was incorrectly called at the virtual Emmys

In the virtual ceremony Jason's name was announced as the winner of the Best Actor for his role in The Outsider, while Ron Cephas Jones’ name appeared on the title card for This Is Us. The ceremony cut to an advert break, before admitting to the mistake when the show came back on.

2. The whole of Jack Whitehall and Lizzo's interaction at the Brits

Yep, the Brit awards happened this year. During the ceremony Jack headed on over to Lizzo's table and started talking about how he saw her at Glastonbury, only she couldn't hear anything he was saying. He then asked Harry Styles if his sister Gemma was his date. It was a lot.

3. When Dua Lipa wrongly assumed Gwen Stefani was married

During an episode of The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon when Dua was guest hosting, she accidentally referred to Gwen's partner Blake as her husband - when they're not actually married. "So I heard that you've been spending quarantine with your husband Blake Shelton at the ranch in Oklahoma," Dua said. "Who else was with you? How was that?"

"Well, he's not my husband," Gwen replied, before easing the awkwardness with, "But that sounded cool when you said that."

The good news is, since the interview in August, Blake and Gwen have actually announced their engagement! After sharing the news on Instagram in October, Dua commented, "Guess our little interview aged well!!!!!! Congratulations!!! Best news."

4. When Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston reunited on-screen

The internet was HYPED about Brad and Jen's virtual read-through of The Fast Times At Ridgemont High, and it's safe to say it didn't disappoint. The pair were playing Linda Barrett and Brad Hamilton, and at one point, Linda appears in Brad's sexual fantasy.

"Hi, Brad," Jen said. "You know how cute I always thought you were. I think you're so sexy. Will you come to me?"

Cue some veeeery giggling celeb reactions.

5. When Tyga tried to flirt with Zendaya on Instagram

Promoting the music video for his single Vacation in June, Tyga posted a preview clip with the caption, "Tag someone you wanna take on vacation! @zendaya?"

After the actress didn't reply, Tyga removed her @ from his caption - and proceeded to be rinsed by fans in the comments. Eek. Guess shooting your shot doesn't always pay off, eh Tyga?

6. When Niall Horan's song came on in the background of Zendaya's Instagram Live

Hailee Steinfeld took to Instagram live to promote her single I Love Yous in March, and was blindsided when her ex-boyfriend Niall Horan's song, Black and White, started playing in the background while she was mid-sentence.

The pair reportedly ended things in December 2018 after almost a year together, with Hailee releasing a single in January 2020 that suggested that Niall may have cheated; "Lookin' back, I probably should have known, but I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin' alone".

Probably not what you want to have on shuffle, then.

7. When Taron Egerton didn't hug Elton John at the Golden Globes

Back in January, when hanging out and hugging was allowed, Taron Egerton won his first Golden Globe for his role as Elton John in Rocketman in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy category.

Elton was seemingly over the moon for the actor, jumping up and down to celebrate. Only, er, Taron didn't notice, and walked to the stage without acknowledging him. Awkward.

8. When Rita Ora hit her head during a live workout

During March's lockdown, the singer was attempting to up morale with a live workout, and managed to hit her head on the ceiling in the process. Thankfully, she seems OK! "Actually crying with laughter at this @RitaOra the gift that keeps on giving," Nick Grimshaw wrote on Twitter with the clip.

9. When Lady Gaga said it was a bad time for an interview - during the interview

Jimmy Fallon called Lady Gaga up for a chat on his show in April, but she said it wasn't a good time for the interview - without realising the interview was live.

He asked if he could call back in 10 minutes, but she asked to reschedule their interview - eventually apologising for cancelling.

"I'm so sorry," she said, putting her head into her hands. "We weren't quite ready yet, and I really appreciate you being so nice about it, and thank you. I love you, I love your viewers, and everyone at home watching. I just wish everybody well."

10. When Channing Tatum promoted his new children's book, without the children's book

The actor announced a fairytale this summer, The One and Only Sparkella, but fans noticed something a bit suspicious about the promotional pictures: the book doesn't actually exist yet. Channing was just holding up the sleeve instead.

11. When the Kim Kardashian conspiracy theory started up again

You know the one, about her having six toes on one foot. In October, Kim shared photos from her 40th birthday party, which involved hiring out a private island for friends and family. And as well as rinsing her out of touch captions, fans also speculated about whether she has an extra toe on one foot:

In September, Kim posted a lengthy video to Instagram explaining that she does not, in fact, have an extra toe on her left foot, calling it "very baffling."

"Everyone thinks that I have six toes, and it's really wild," she explained, before pointing the camera at her foot. "But it's this, part of my foot, that when I wear a shoe just like this it like smashes down right here and in a picture, I don't know why, it looks like a sixth toe.'

12. When Louis Tomlinson shut down a question about Zayn Malik

During a chat on BBC Breakfast in February, Louis was grilled on everything from his feud with Zayn Malik to sharing personal lyrics about the loss of his mum and his sister.

Despite the 28-year-old handling the interrogation very well, he later took to Twitter and snapped at the interview, writing, "Defo wont be going on there again haha! Love to all my fans for always having my back / Anyway f*** the negativity now. It's been a siiiiick week."
