Moving abroad takes a lot of work. I should know. I moved from the United States to Portugal in 2021 to complete my PhD work in journalism. It was a process filled with google searches, speaking with friends, and friends of friends, and second cousins twice removed from friends of those friends to find many of the answers I was looking for. While I wouldn’t exactly say moving abroad was easy, I will always say the juice was well worth the squeeze. And it appears I’m not the only one to fall in love with the Iberian nation.

According to a new report by Givetastic, a website that helps people collect money for group gifts, Portugal ranks as the 10th most popular country to emigrate to for work.

So, where else are people looking to move right now? As the results showed, the No. 1 choice for Americans is Canada.

“After conducting our thorough research, Canada came out on top,” the findings explained. To come to this conclusion, the team analyzed the average monthly google search volume for up to 164 countries, using the Keywords Explorer tool, including the words “jobs” and “work” in up to 35 different languages.

And Canada didn’t just come in first for Americans. It was also the top search in 56 out of 164 countries. “Canada is a great option for people looking to emigrate,” the findings added. “It offers ample employment opportunities, free health care, and an excellent education system. What’s not to love?”

Germany came in as the second most popular nation to emigrate for work, followed by Qatar, the U.K., Switzerland, Australia, Spain, the United States, Malta, Niger, and once again, Portugal rounding out the top 10.

As for the most popular city to move to, Dubai came out on top. It was the No. 1 searched city to move to for work for a whopping 68 countries. It was followed by Quebec in second place, and Singapore, Moscow, Miami, London, New York, Melbourne, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik rounding out the top 10.
