Well, folks 2023 is almost over which means it’s time to reflect. This year has had many laughable moments: from the nepo-baby discourse, to “Kenergy,” and that time when Angela Basset “Did the thing.” No matter what, we can always count on pop culture for a good giggle. It makes sense then, that this year brought a surplus of funny movies too.
In case you missed it, 2023 saw the return of many great comedians—like Jennifer Lawrence, Adam Sandler, Tom Hanks, and Paul Giamatti who all starred in great comedies. The good times didn’t stop there either, Greta Gerwig made everyone laugh, then cry, with Barbie. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Wright’s depiction of a tired Black novelist brought endless laughter along with some much-needed reflection about the state of media. Even Judy Bloom got her flowers with the equally heartwarming and hilarious coming-of-age drama, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

American Fiction (In Theaters)
American Fiction follows Monk, an author who's tired of the publishers exploiting Black people. When his editor says he needs to write a “black book,” Monk takes it as an opportunity to write a ridiculous story full of offensive stereotypes. He releases the book under a pen name, thinking it won’t get sold anyway, but his life is turned upside down when the book becomes a bestseller.

Based on Judy Bloom’s iconic coming-of-age story, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret follows an eleven-year-old girl in the throes of puberty. In a desperate attempt to understand herself, and her ever-expanding world, Margaret begins praying to God for assistance. Along the way, she learns the true meaning of life can be found in the people around her.

Think of Poor Things like Frankenstein but with a twist. No one wants to spend the holidays alone, but in The Holdovers a gaggle of abandoned prep-school kids are nearly forced to — until their crotchety teacher agrees to babysit. Set in 1970 during the Vietnam War, the film tracks the group's winter break which leads to a few unlikely friendships.

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie will make you want to reconnect with your inner child. The movie follows Barbie and Ken, two dolls who travel to the real world when Barbie Land begins to crumble. Barbie is told that she has to find her human owner to fix things, but she soon discovers that humans are more complicated than she imagined.
