The 20 Most Amazing Looks From The National Beard and Moustache Championships

The National Beard and Moustache Championships took place this weekend, and unsurprisingly, they took place in Brooklyn. Despite the many beard and mustache wearers in Brooklyn (especially with Movember and No Shave November in full swing), upwards of 300 contestants traveled from all over the country to compete. Contestants are judged in 18 categories ranging from Fu Manchu to Musketeer, each with an individual set of rules. For example, the Garibaldi beard is “broad, full and round. Length not to exceed 20 cm, moustache integrated. Aids are not allowed.”

This is one of the biggest facial hair events in the world, second to only the World Beard and Moustache Championships, which took place in Austria this October and were dominated by Americans, who took 1st place in 6 of the 16 categories. “It’s really all about brotherhood and camaraderie,” 40-time beard title winner Nate “Chops” Johnson told GQ. “But sometimes competition brings out the weird side of human nature.”
