Warner Bros. Games has announced Mortal Kombat 1, a reimagined take on the long-running action-adventure series.

As fans anticipated the next installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise, it was expected that it would take the form of Mortal Kombat 12. The CEO of Warner Bros. Games seemed to affirm that notion, referring to the game as Mortal Kombat 12 on a conference call. Cue to earlier this month when the Mortal Kombat Instagram shared a video of a clock hand skipping 12 and going right to 1.

With this new title, the game will be starting off from square one as a reboot, rather than a sequel. Mortal Kombat 1 will give players a totally fresh version of the game’s world, characters and storyline, complete with new modes and features. It follows up the canon ending of Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath DLC, in which series hero Lu Kang, who has inherited God of Thunder Raiden's powers becomes Fire God Lu Kang, and defeats the twisted keeper of time, Kronika, as well as the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung, essentially making him an omnipotent being who has full control of time and resets it to its beginning — setting the stage for the events of this new game.

“It’s In Our Blood. Discover a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe created by Fire God Liu Kang,” the game’s trailer describes. “Mortal Kombat 1 ushers in a new era of the iconic franchise with a new fighting system, game modes, and Fatalities!”

Mortal Kombat 1 is slated to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Nintendo Switch on September 19. In the meantime, watch the official announcement trailer above.
