‘The Morning Show’ Crew Talks Jennifer Aniston’s Viral Valentino Dress, Costume Design & More With FIT

Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” has been filled with a range of sharp costumes over its three seasons. In fact, the drama’s fashion was highlighted in a panel at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) with costume designer Sophie de Rakoff and executive producer Kristin Hahn, moderated by Hal Rubenstein.
“I think what our show offers up is a whole wide range of characters who are always at work, who are wildly different but very well-dressed,” de Rakoff said of outfitting Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and more stars. “They live on three different levels. They’re news anchors, so they have a very performative aspect to that, because they are on the news, they are playing the character of a news anchor. Then they go into what we call the ‘camera-ready world,’ which is when they’re out in public or they go into a restaurant and they know they’re going to be photographed. And then you have them at home, when it’s just them and just their families.”

One bold season 3 moment featured an FIT and Valentino gala, including cameos by creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli and FIT’s design students. For the occasion — which coincided with Roe v. Wade’s overturn on the show — Aniston wore a custom Valentino dress modeled after one she wore to the 2010 Golden Globes.
“We really found the juxtaposition of talking about women’s autonomy and fashion a very interesting place to start thinking about a whole story thread,” Hahn shared. “I called Jen [Aniston], and I was like, ‘Valentino said yes.’ I basically reached out [and said], ‘Can you make a dress for Jen, pretty quick? She loved this dress that he had designed for her before. He recreated an homage to that dress.”
The scene also highlighted FIT and Piccioli’s love of supporting young designers entering the industry.
“The framework for the scene was about FIT, and you [students], and young, new voices in fashion being born, and being inspired by him in whatever way he can inspire you,” Hahn said. “He wants to bring fashion to the people, and get off the pedestal.”
