More 'Big Shot'! What We Know About Season 2 of John Stamos' Redemption Series

John Stamos is coming back as a DII coach for season 2!

A hotheaded basketball coach who throws a chair at a referee might not sound like the kind of guy you'd want to spend time with, much less have coach at an elite all-girls high school. However, in the Disney+ series Big Shot, there’s a chance that you’ll get to like him as the show unfolds—and that’s not just because he’s played by John Stamos.

Perhaps the biggest surprise about Big Shot, which is like a Mighty Ducks/League of Their Own mashup and redemption tale, is that it’s not exactly a comedy, even though it has comedic elements. The show was co-created by David E. Kelley. (Yes, the same Kelley who brought Ally McBeal, Doogie Howser, The Practice, Big Little Lies and many other hit shows to the screen.)

“It’s not Sesame Street and it’s not Breaking Bad. It’s somewhere in the middle, and it’s quality,” Stamos, who plays Coach Marvyn Korn, said in an interview in June. “What this show does in not being as edgy, it replaces with heart. I think it’s a very warm, heartfelt show, and it’s not too sappy or sentimental.”

While that might be true, Korn was not warm and fuzzy in Big Shot season 1. After getting fired from a high-profile NCAA job, he arrives at Westbrook School for Girls and doesn’t start off on the right foot with his new team, even telling one of his players she needed to lose five pounds. Her response? “They all said that you were a psycho. They were wrong. You’re just a bully.”

Luckily, Korn starts to get it together, becoming more of a mentor and less of a taskmaster as he starts to build bonds with his players. He even learns to be a better father to his own teen daughter, who moves in (and goes to Westbrook!) when her mom (Korn’s ex-wife) takes a job in Italy. Eventually, Coach Korn “starts to grow into the man he’s secretly always hoped to be and the father he never had,” according to Disney.

Fans warmed to Big Shot, as did many critics; one called it one of the best original Disney+ shows in 2021. One reason for that may be that the show isn’t just about Korn; it’s about the young women he coaches too. The show follows their lives both on and off the court. “It’s about empowerment and young girls finding their voice and unapologetically going for what they want out of life,” says Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays the school’s dean.

Another reason for the show’s success could be that having a show built around young women athletes is still not too common, even these days, and the young women on the Westbrook Sirens actually had to learn to play. “No part of it was fake. There were parts that I wish were fake but they were completely real,” actress Nell Verlaque shared back in April 2021.

On Sept. 2, 2021, Disney finally announced that Big Shot Season 2 is in the works. Stamos is excited. “At its core, Big Shot is about guts and heart, and that is what Disney+ demonstrated by giving us a second season,” Stamos posted on Instagram, sending love to fans and critics alike. He later added, “I’m so grateful to continue to play Coach Korn, a man who learns to let go of preconceived judgments and learns from an incredible group of women, helping him to evolve and grow. And yet, he still has so much more to learn…thankfully he’ll get that chance in Season 2.”

Is Big Shot canceled?

Nope! When Season 1 ended in June, fans were pumped to find out what happens to Korn and his team—so, when there wasn’t any renewal news for weeks afterwards, they started to fret that the series may have gotten the axe. Stamos held out hope, though. “I have a good feeling about coming back, but it’s premature,” Stamos said at the time. Luckily, in September 2021, Disney gave a definitive answer about whether they’d be bringing back the show—and the answer was yes!

What happened in Big Shot season 1?

Gruff, aggressive and hotheaded, Coach Marvyn Korn lost his NCAA coaching job for throwing a chair at a referee, so he agrees to be the coach for a swanky all-girls private high school, Westbrook. His rough style doesn’t do him any favors with the players. Korn’s daughter Emma also comes to stay with him full-time when her mom takes a job in Italy. Slowly, Korn learns to soften his stern exterior and start building better relationships. The Westbrook Sirens start looking better on the court and people take notice, including the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). The school offers him a coaching job right as the Sirens are prepping for a big game against the Carlsbad Cobras. The Siren playbook goes missing and they suspect Carlsbad; Coach Korn has to come up with new plays, including one he calls the “Sacrifice Play.”

Coach Korn decides not to take the UCSB job offer and makes the choice to stay on at Westbrook. “I set out to write a new playbook for the team, and I did, but I ended up writing a new one for me,” he tells them before the big game. Tensions run high because of various hijinks meant to throw the Sirens off their game (and a swarm of bees that enters the gym!); Coach Korn recommends playing without fans. In a nail-biter, after using the Sacrifice Play, Mouse throws the winning basket.

Who is in the Big Shot cast?

Stamos, still known by many as “Uncle Jessie” from the Full House franchise, wasn’t expecting to get a chance to portray Coach Korn at all. When he heard about the “new” David E. Kelley show he might be a part of, he imagined he’d be playing a darker role, perhaps a lawyer. “I’ve never been athletic. I’ve never been into sports or watched sports,” he told Collider in 2021.

Luckily, he pulled it off—and Kelley is glad Stamos got the job. “The show has touched so many hearts—John Stamos’ brilliance, especially, as Coach Marvyn Korn,” the writer/producer said. Stamos is, of course, returning for Big Shot Season 2, and it looks like the following players from Season 1 will be among those on the court with him:

Are there any Big Shot season 2 spoilers?

No Big Shot season 2 spoilers have bubbled to the surface yet, but there is plenty of speculation about what could happen next. (Season 1 spoilers ahead once more!)

Because Westbook did beat Carlsbad in the season 1 closer, the team will be moving on as a Division II high school. With that change will bring new basketball teams and personalities, not to mention tougher playing challenges. Will they be able to keep their Division II status?

The Season 1 finale also clued us in that Assistant Coach Holly is set to be the new coach at Carlsbad, coaching the team the Westbrook Sirens narrowly beat. That means there could be a rematch with Westbrook, which would be a high-stakes situation for everyone involved.

Where is Big Shot filmed?

While it may look like the Westbrook Sirens are playing in a real high school, Big Shot was actually filmed in Los Angeles, California on the Paramount lot. COVID-19 caused trouble for the set, which was shut down more than once for positive COVID tests. “My son went to bed last night crying and woke up crying cause he can’t be with his father,” Stamos said in January. "I’m grateful to have a job, it’s a privilege at this time. I was exposed to the virus for the third time, and have to isolate again for another 10 days!”

Stamos also implored people on Twitter to take the pandemic seriously. “I feel my job is doing what they can to keep us safe,” he tweeted. “But people, please follow the rules — your actions affect so many more lives than just your own. Thanks.”

Is there a Big Shot Season 2 trailer?

You bet! With season 2 just weeks away, we're getting all kinds of peeks into Coach Korn's evolution and what life's like for the Sirens now that Westbrook is a Division II school. "Everything you do in this gym and out affects all of us. Where we're going is anything but normal," Korn (Stamos) tells the team in this season 2 trailer.

How many episodes does Big Shot have?

The first season of Big Shot consisted of 10 episodes, ranging from 43 minutes to 54 minutes in length, with the season finale being the longest episode. Season 2 will also be 10 episodes, but we don't yet know the episode lengths.
