More Than 600 Cases of Dog Food Have Been Recalled Nationwide—Here's Why

Ring the alarm, pawrents; there's a pretty big recall going down for your pup's dog food and it's one you really need to hear about. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Mid America Pet Food is recalling more than 600 cases of a popular dog food brand, effectively immediately.

In the September 4 recall announcement, the FDA noted that the company issued a voluntary recall for the popular Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Hi-Pro Plus that was produced at its Mount Pleasant, Texas facility. The reason for the recall? Approximately 644 cases of dog food could potentially be contaminated with salmonella. The product in question was discovered after a single sample of the dog food tested positive for the bacteria during a random sample test conducted by South Carolina's Department of Agriculture.

Products included in the recall were sold to various retailers and distributors nationwide and were sold in 5-pound bags. The affected product bears the lot code of 1000016385 (found on the back of the bag) and includes at Best By Date of April 30, 2023. If you have any of the other varieties of the Victor dog food brand though, those are all clear to be consumed by your dog.

For those unaware, salmonella can affect animals in way similar to what it does for human. Symptoms can include nausea, fever, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramping. More serious symptoms, however, can include muscle pain, eye irritating, arthritis and more. And while your fur friends are at risk of contamination by eating the affected product, pup parents are also at risk if they've handled the contaminated products — especially if a thorough hand wash has not been implemented.

Those who happen to have the product in question in their homes are urged to destroy the food so that children, pets, and wildlife cannot consume it. Retailers in possession of the product are also urged to the same. Afterwards, be sure to wash and sanitize both your hands and any surfaces or utensils that came in contact with the recalled food.
