More Than 234,000 Pounds of Cooked Pork Products Recalled Due to Possible Listeria Contamination

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) just announced that Alexander & Hornung, a meat producer and a unit of Perdue, has recalled approximately 234,391 pounds of fully cooked ham and pepperoni products. The products have been voluntarily recalled in cooperation with USDA because they may be contaminated with Listeria.

Per the recall notice, the ham and pepperoni products were produced on various dates, but all bear the establishment number "EST. M10125" inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide. See the full list of recalled products below:

According to the recall, the contamination was discovered when Alexander & Hornung notified FSIS that a product sampling had positive Listeria monocytogenes results.

Thus far, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these foods. However, FSIS is concerned that some consumers may unknowingly have these products in their refrigerators or freezers. Additionally, consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Instead, these products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

FSIS notes that eating food contaminated with Listeria (L. monocytogenes) can cause listeriosis—a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.

Listeriosis symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea, or other gastrointestinal symptoms. The infection can also spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract, and can lead to serious complications for pregnant women. Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics.
