In Morbius , Jared Leto Enters the Marvel Fray

Much like the Venom spinoff movie that came out in 2018 and made $850 million worldwide, it's kind of hard to believe that Sony's new superhero standalone, Morbius, is a real thing. It sounds like a joke movie designed by committee: Jared Leto plays a C-level Spider-Man villain in a standalone movie about a sick dude who becomes a... vampire? Vampire-adjacent? What exactly, may I ask, is going on here? Let's take a look.

Yeah, we've got ourselves a gritty origin story superhero movie right here. But before we get into the "what" of it all, let's delve into the "who." Just who is Morbius, and what exactly is a "living vampire"? Morbius, according to the classic comic book lore, is actually a "pseudo-vampire" named Michael Morbius, who accidentally turns himself into a monster while trying to cure a rare, fatal blood disease. What is a "pseudo-vampire," you might find yourself asking now? It's like a normal vampire who "does not possess all the powers of a supernatural vampire, nor is he subject to all the traditional limitations and weaknesses thereof." Basically: Dude loves blood, and also he can come into your house without having to ring the doorbell. Spooky.

Jared Leto will not be taking up the mantle of The Joker again for quite some time thanks to the double whammy of the DC universe quietly and slowly rebooting itself, and the, sigh, heavily Oscar-nominated Joker. Instead, he switches teams to Marvel/Sony, arbiters of the Spider-Man and Venom universes. Don't be surprised if Toms—Holland or Hardy—show up briefly in this one; Michael Keaton's Adrian Toomes (a.k.a. Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming) even has a cameo at the end of this trailer.

Morbius will be released this later summer, and will also co-star Adria Arjona, Chernobyl's Jared Harris, and Doctor Who's Matt Smith.

But it wouldn't be the Academy Awards without some big ol’ snubs now, would it?
