Montrose Earth Week events

MONTROSE, Colo. (KREX) — The City of Montrose is inviting the community to celebrate Earth Week from April 22-26 with several events aimed at helping to grow and preserve a healthy environment for all city residents. The city sponsors and coordinates a full schedule of Earth Week events every year; this year’s theme is “Invest in Montrose.”

Schedule of events:

April 19: K-5 Coloring Contest and Art Contest opens

The City of Montrose and Shavano Conservation District is presenting the 18th annual Earth Day Coloring Contest. The deadline for entries is April 25. The winner for each grade will receive a prize from the city and winning entries will be displayed in the Montrose Daily Press. Coloring sheets for grades K-2 and grades 3-5 can be found on the City of Montrose’s website. Completed entries can be brought to the Montrose Pavilion or emailed to tceniceros@cityofmontrose.org.

April 19: Made in Montrose

The City of Montrose assembled a list of local companies offering sustainable products and services; locals are encouraged to support one of these businesses during Earth Week. If you know a business that isn’t on the list but should be, contact tceniceros@cityofmontrose.org to add it.

April 20: Farm Fresh

The City of Montrose is holding a farmers market downtown at Centennial Plaza. Those unable to attend the farmers market can view the city’s list of local farmers and businesses selling quality products. If you do not see a local farmer on the list who should be, contact tceniceros@cityofmontrose.org so the city can promote them.

April 21: Remember to Conserve

The City of Montrose is offering a free, online tool to help homeowners save water and money with their monthly water bills. The Aquahawk app allows city water customers to monitor water usage, access tools to help lower monthly water bills and set and receive alerts.

April 22: Keep Montrose Beautiful

The City of Montrose encourages members of the Adopt-a-Street/Trail program to participate in their respective cleanups on April 27.

Those interested in participating in the Adopt-a-Street/Trail program can either visit the program’s website or call 970-240-1480.

April 23: Recycling 101

The City of Montrose Public Works Department and local volunteer group Montrose Recycles are partnering to teach a local third grade class about recycling.

Recycling tips will be posted on the City of Montrose’s Facebook and Instagram along with tips and tricks on composting.

April 24: Our River Matters

Friends on the River Uncompahgre (FORU) is holding a riverside trail maintenance project from 5-7 p.m. on April 24. All members of the public are encouraged to participate; equipment and snacks will be provided. The trail is located west of Home Depot and accessed by the parking lot where Ogden Road dead ends.

April 25: Leave No Trace

The City of Montrose encourages everyone to pick up after themselves while using local outdoor facilities; the city encourages those who want to learn more about taking care of the outdoors to visit the Leave No Trace website.

April 26: Plant a Tree

The City of Montrose Parks Division is hosting the Arbor Day Tree Planting Ceremony at 14600 Marine Road at 10 a.m. on April 26. Those unable to attend can participate by renting a plot in the Niagara Community Garden to help the environment.

April 26 and 27: Spring Cleanup

The City of Montrose will continue its annual Spring Cleanup tradition by providing disposal and recycling services from a single collection point. Residents can bring approved cleanup items to the drop-off site located off the San Juan Bypass across the street from the Sunshine Peak apartment complex. Signs will direct residents to the drop-off location.

The event will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 26 and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 27.

April 27: Know Your River

After the Adopt-a-Street/Trail program’s service day, the city will have a presentation by FORU board member Mike Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh will speak about the importance of the Uncompahgre River in the community and what FORU does.
