Montana Ski Resort Is Still Waiting For Enough Snow To Open

Earlier this week, Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, Montana, shared that it doesn't have enough snow to open despite a recent storm.

The small Resort is located just west of Flathead Lake, offering a small handful of lifts and a decidedly homey vibe.

Its current status—struggling to open amidst uncooperative weather conditions—mirrors that of other Western Montanan resorts. South from Blacktail, at Montana Snowbowl, the snow has come in brief, decidedly unsatisfying bursts. Snowbowl hasn't fully opened this season but plans to run its rope tow this weekend.

Whitefish Resort, another western Montana classic, managed to open on December 7th after "fighting valiantly against warm temperatures and rain."

As a Missoula, Montana, local, the current status of the ski season is a bit tough to bear. To be blunt—it seems like winter's given up on us. But that was foreseen.

NOAA, alongside other forecasting groups, predicted that a strong El Niño would settle in this winter. That prediction panned out, which wasn't good news for the Pacific Northwest and Western Montana. Both regions tend to be warmer during El Niño years.

But hey, it ain't over til' it's over. Technically, the season's just starting, so Western Montana has plenty of time to make a diving catch. Blacktail Mountain locals—we're thinking snow.
