Montana Ski Area Names New Lift After Longtime GM

Jeff Schmidt, the general manager of Red Lodge Mountain, Montana, is known and appreciated by his community for several reasons, but this past weekend, one of his many defining traits stole the show: his mustache.

Red Lodge opened on November 24th and fired up its newest chair, the Stache Express, named for Schmidt's famously stout mustache. The aptly titled high-speed triple transports skiers from Red Lodge's base to a mid-mountain area featuring beginner and intermediate terrain.

The Stache Express, originally named Sunnyside, is from Alta Ski Area, Utah. It offers considerably improved uphill capacity over its predecessor, the Miami Beach two-seater. Travel time via the Stache Express is eight to nine minutes faster, depositing skiers at the top of the Miami Beach zone in roughly three minutes.

Schmidt has managed Red Lodge since 2009 and overseen several on-mountain improvements. The lift naming dedication was a surprise for Schmidt.

Red Lodge employees handed out complimentary mustaches to skiers not already sporting their own in celebration of the upgraded chairlift.

On Friday, the stoke wasn't all about mustaches, new chairlifts, and adored general managers. Mother Nature also contributed to the celebratory atmosphere, depositing seven inches of fresh snow before opening day.

Four of Red Lodge's seven chairlifts are open as of today, November 27th, meaning ski season is nearly in full swing at the Montana ski resort.
