Monster Hunter Zoids crossover teaser

There are two things I care about more than pretty much anything else except Kingdom Hearts: Monster Hunter and Zoids. My love for both spans more than a decade, and pretty soon, two of my favorite things in the world are about to collide in the best way possible.

The official Zoids Twitter account announced today that, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Zoids and the 20th anniversary of Monster Hunter, at least two Zoids figures would be released based on Monster Hunter. The account shared a teaser image showing two figures, one based on the Rathalos, and the other based on Monster Hunter Rise’s key monster, the fearsome Magnamalo.

Zoids is a toy and multimedia franchise from Tomy that focuses on big mechanical creatures, often fancy versions of animals like tigers, lions, and dinosaurs, but spanning just about everything. It was originally launched as a series of model kits in Japan under the “Mechabonica” name, but found much more success in the US and Europe as Zoids, which was then used for the series in Japan, too.

It quickly spun out into a massive multimedia franchise, with six anime series, and while all but one made it to the US, it massively waned in popularity following the airing of Zoids Fuzors in 2003. Its revival, Zoids Wild, has been slowly growing more popular outside of Japan since its release in 2018, and while it’s still not quite on the level of, say, Gundam, it’s still getting there.

We don’t have any more details about the Zoids crossover with Monster Hunter just yet, but Tomy says more details are coming on January 12, 2024. We expect there’ll probably be more than just the two model kits teased – I’m personally hoping for a Khezu figure – but either way, this is a pretty big crossover that could hopefully lead the way to more popularity for Zoids in the West and maybe even more crossovers in the future. Wouldn’t that be nice?
