Monroeville standouts compete at Ironman

Dec. 11—CUYAHOGA FALLS — Two returning state placers for Monroeville competed in the top tournament in the country on Saturday at the 28th annual Ironman tournament at Walsh Jesuit High School.

Ashton Homan — the top-ranked wrestler in the state in Division III at 138 pounds according to borofanohio.net — went 2-2 in the tournament that features standouts from across the country.

Homan opened with a pin in 3:42 over Hayden Hughes of St. Paris Graham, then lost a 3-1 decision to Jakob Romero from Pomona, Colo. Romero was a state champion at 126 pounds last season and is headed to NCAA Division I Utah Valley University.

In the consolations, he defeated Josiah Gardner (Canon-McMillan, Pa.) by a 4-2 score before falling 5-0 to Parker Reynolds (Brownsburg, Ind.).

At 144 pounds, Hunter Vogus — the No. 4-ranked wrestler in Div. III — went 0-2 with a pair of close decision setbacks.

Vogus lost 11-5 in the first round to Dominic Hoffarth of Louisville, who won the OHSAA state title at 138 pounds last season in Div. II. He then fell in the consolation to Anthony Bahl — a state finalist from Crown Point, Ind. — with a 4-2 loss in sudden victory.

Also on Saturday, the Eagles placed 11 wrestlers to win the Bucyrus Invitational. They scored 191 points behind three individual champions and six finalists to win the 16-team tournament.

Ian Patchen (138), Landen Roeder (150) and Brencyn Evans (165) won titles for Monroeville.

Patchen opened with a 10-0 major decision, followed by pins in 2:34, 21 seconds and 3:31 to win his weight. At 150, Roeder won by pins in 23 seconds, 2:00, 1:14, 15 seconds and a 9-1 major decision in the finals.

Evans — ranked No. 16 at 165 by borofanohio.net — posted pins in 1:40, 1:22, 2:35, injury default and a pin in 1:33 in the finals.

Finishing second for the Eagles was Braden Barman (113), Landin Hershiser (175) and Peyton Barnhart (285). Cameron Blasetzky (106), Ben Seitz (157) and Braden Dunlap (215) each finished third, while Hayden Ryan (190) was fifth and Brody McGee (126) was sixth.

NL's Mitchell wins at Bellevue

BELLEVUE — New London junior Markell Mitchell won the 120-pound weight class on Saturday at the Bob Bailey Invitational in Bellevue.

Mitchell won three matches by pin to win his weight class. He needed 48 seconds to pin Bellevue's Landon Lewis; 2:34 to pin Amherst's Josh Trinski; and 1:53 to pin Bellevue's Ben Jacobs.

Also for New London, Wyatt Harrison was fourth at 132, while Xander Wallhead (113) and Julian Kopas (175) each placed sixth.

Plymouth sixth at Clear Fork

BELLVILLE — The Big Red placed 11 of 13 wrestlers on Saturday at the Clear Fork Invitational.

Cameron Wagers (113) and Colton Sparks (190) finished in first place for Plymouth.

Wagers had three pins in 4:15, :50 and 1:05 before edging FC foe Diton Farnsworth of South Central by a 2-1 score in the finals.

Sparks pinned his way through five matches to win 190 in times of 30 seconds, 1:19, 1:51, 3:02 and 33 seconds.

Also for Plymouth, Noah Robinson finished third at 215, followed by Jackson Dennison (157) in fourth; Cayle Pope (138) in fifth; Zach Miller (144) in sixth; Thomas Winegardner (106) in seventh; and Hunter McClure (165) in eighth.

For South Central, three other wrestlers places after Farnsworth. Brandon Smith also reached the finals and had to injury default at 175, while Alex Hamons (215) was sixth and Cole Frankart (132) was eighth.
