Monopoly Is Getting a Major Change for the First Time in 85 Years

From The Pioneer Woman

For the first time in more than 85 years, Monopoly is getting a makeover.

Don't worry—the game itself is going to be played the same way, but longtime fans will soon notice a few unmistakable updates to the iconic board.

Hasbro, the makers of Monopoly, recently announced that all 16 of the game's "Community Chest Cards" are getting a modern refresh. According to the company, the cards currently cover somewhat outdated topics like beauty contests, life insurance, and holiday funds.

"The world has changed a lot since Monopoly became a household name more than 85 years ago, and clearly today community is more important than ever," said Eric Nyman, Chief Consumer Officer at Hasbro. "We felt like 2021 was the perfect time to give fans the opportunity to show the world what community means to them through voting on new Community Chest Cards. We’re really excited to see what new cards get voted in!"

That's right, people—you get a say in the future of Monopoly!

Hasbro wants fans to help the game reflect their real lives by voting on new cards with topics like helping neighbors, supporting local causes, and rescuing animals. There will still be "Go to Jail" cards, of course, but they will offer a little more context for the punishment. One option says: "You find a wallet on the sidewalk and decide not to return it. GO TO JAIL. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200." (Seems fair! 😂)

The updated version of Monopoly with the new, fan-voted Community Chest Cards will be available this fall. Head over to MonopolyCommunityChest.com to cast your votes!
