Is 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' Coming Back for Season 2?

LEGENDARY ENTERTAINMENT'S ONGOING series of films and TV shows centered around the epic movie monsters King Kong and Godzilla continued to expand in 2023, building on the city-destroying action of the big-screen releases with a new series that deepened the mythology of the interconnected "MonsterVerse."

The AppleTV+ show Monarch: Legacy of Monsters explores the backstory and evolution of the mysterious Monarch organization that appears in the films, and stars real-life father and son actors Kurt and Wyatt Russell, who play the same character at two different stages in his life.

"In the movies, buildings get knocked down. In the show, it's the people who get up and have to figure out how to go on," writer Matt Fraction told Men's Health. "It's very much about aftermath. And legacy."

Season 1 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters takes place in the immediate aftermath of 2014's Godzilla, and is a direct sequel to the events of that film, while also helping to fill in some of the narrative gaps leading up to later movies. The season finale aired on January 12, and is now streaming on AppleTV+.

Is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters coming back for Season 2?

Right now, there is no official plan for a second season of the show, but the creative team behind Monarch are confident that it has performed well enough in terms of viewership that a renewal could be on the horizon.

“We do not have a Season 2 order," says showrunner Chris Black. "This show has done very well, so we’re optimistic and excited. We feel we have more story to tell."

It is also highly encouraging that Apple has a track record of letting its original programs run for multiple seasons and investing huge amounts of money in sci-fi content like Foundation, For All Mankind and Silo. Watch this space.
