Spoiler alert for Stranger Things 4, Vol.2.

You would think that when writing and directing the epic season finale of a show like Stranger Things, where so many different characters and storylines have to be carefully orchestrated, there would be no room for improvisation on the actors' part. But as the team behind the series have revealed, that's not true.

In the moments leading up to Hopper's chase scene and eventual showdown with the Demogorgan, he and Joyce (with whom he has only just been reunited) share a kiss. According to a tweet from the official Twitter account of the Stranger Things writers' room, the kiss wasn't scripted, and was actually something that actors David Harbour and Winona Ryder came up with themselves.

During the incredibly tense scene in the Creel house attic after Max and Eleven's psychic battle against Vecna, while cradling Max's broken body, Lucas screams for his sister to get help; this was an improvised line from Caleb McLaughlin, who plays him.

Finally, one of the episode's most heartbreaking moments was entirely unscripted: in the scene where Eddie Munson dies after bravely taking on the monster-bats of the Upside Down, he tells Dustin "I love you, man." This line of dialogue, which lends the scene even more pathos, was thought up by actor Joseph Quinn.

"I think there are all different kind of flavors of love, and I think men sometimes struggle to talk about that," Quinn said in a recent interview with Collider. "I personally had definitely had older people, guys in my life who I admired and definitely had this kind of fraternal love towards, and I felt that from them too. That's what me and Gaten wanted to convey with our storyline really, so I'm glad that came across."
