After Kristen Perkins, a resident of Glenmora, Louisiana, lost her beloved daughter to an accident almost two years ago, nothing felt more right than honoring her in a special, meaningful way.

Her daughter Leeleanne, nicknamed Leedle, died while rescuing an injured dog on the road. Now, Perkins runs a dog rescue in memory of Leeleanne, so she can give as many animals as possible a second chance at life, just as her daughter was trying to do at the time of her death.

On January 2022, as per KALB News reporting, Leeleanne was driving when she spotted an injured canine lying on the roadside. Determined to rescue the pup, Leeleanne pulled over and rushed to where the animal was.

Unfortunately, a vehicle knocked her down as she tried to save the dog. Tragically, she did not make it.

In memory of her cherished daughter, Perkins started “Leedle’s Dirty Paws Rescue,” to keep Leeleanne’s memory alive. Furthermore, Perkins considers the rescue her special way of expressing gratitude to her late daughter for being who she was; a selfless, caring, animal-loving individual.

“She would be over the moon,” Perkins told the news outlet. “It would mean so much to her. A lot of people ask me why I do this. ‘Why are you doing this? It’s too much.'” To Perkins, “It’s a way to continue to remember her.”

Moreover, Perkins shared the importance of observing safety protocols while rescuing an animal on the road, since one may unknowingly put themselves in danger.

“Don’t do it by yourself. Always let someone know where you are if you pull over on the side of the road,” she explained. “Make sure you are out of the road, and you’re on the right side of the road. Have your caution lights on.”

Perkins further added: “She didn’t have her caution lights on. She was definitely not on the right side of the road. She was off the road but on the wrong side of the road. “
