Mom Brought to Tears After Daughter Was Told to Change Her "Inappropriate" Dress
When you're the junior class president, first in your year and enrolled AP classes, you're probably not used to being called down to the principal's office. So when, Rosey Abuabara's daughter called her crying from Tom C. Clark High School in San Antonio, Texas, telling her to come to the school in the middle of the day, she knew something was off base.
With the slew of ridiculous "dress-code" stories circulating around the Internet, Abuabara's daughter's doesn't come as a shock. Clad in a long-sleeved dress that covered absolutely everything (don't even say the words "fingertips-length," I'll lose it), Sophia Abuabara was prepared for a long afternoon, with exams in AP physics, Latin 3 and AP U.S. History. And then, allegedly, her principal told her to change, disrupting her day, and took her attention away from those tests. All for what? Because her dress was too short for school, it seems.

Let's break this down. San Antonio is hot, meaning that girls often have to sacrifice being cool (you know, not living in a pool of your own sweat) to antiquated dress codes. Abuabara posted a side-by-side photo of a boy leaving the school dressed in shorts up to his mid-thigh and a tank top (I see shoulders!) on Instagram to make this point. The boy in the photo later commented on Abuabara's post, saying that he had changed after school - he didn't go to class in the outfit. He did however validate Abuabara by saying that there is "an uneven application of the rules" between male and female students. Yep.
Abuabara didn't acquiesce, though - she marched right into the (male) principal's office to make a case for her daughter, refusing to give her clothing to change (since there was nothing wrong with her original outfit). Unfortunately, she was escorted out by campus police for speaking her mind, but only after the principal reportedly asked if she needed to "call her husband to take care of this." So if you didn't think it could get worse, it did.
She took to Facebook in tears, posting an emotional video about the ordeal (it has over 7,000 views and counting, so this is definitely resonating with parents everywhere). She goes into full detail. "I told him, 'I saw what she wore to school today," she said on the video. "I told him, 'Your authority does not supersede mine as a parent, as her mother.'"
"He was offended because I told him he was sexist," she went on to explain. "I know that this is a problem, I know that a lot of girls, and I'm sure my daughter knows even more, complain about the dress code and I really think it's about freaking time we address it."
Considering that girls' educations are being put at risk time and again over their physical appearances, we'd have to agree.
