Modernity, Matcha and Maxis: Stitch Fix Drops 2024 Trend Predictions

From pop culture moments like the “Barbie” movie to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and TikTok trends like quiet luxury and tomato girl summer, 2023 was a year of cultural phenomena that influenced fashion like never before. And finding suitable fits for the Renaissance Tour or Barbenheimer was no easy feat. With another year of pop culture moments and social gatherings in front of us, it brings along the constant challenge of figuring out what to wear.

Stitch Fix dove into billions of data points from more than 100 million “fixes” and identified this decision fatigue as the most common struggle that most clients faced; over half reported feeling mentally overwhelmed or stressed out when deciding what to wear.

In response to this, the e-commerce styling service released the Stitch Fix 2024 Style Forecast, which takes a closer look at what its clients are looking for and why—as well as highlighting the key trends for 2024.

To combat decision fatigue, Stitch Fix created two “fool-proof” styling formulas for a simplified approach to getting dressed.

The “two texture technique” is as straightforward as it sounds: making sure an outfit has at least two different textures at play. And the “three-layer rule” is equally simple: creating an outfit using three distinct layers that serve different purposes.

Here are the key trends Stitch Fix identified for 2024.

Book Smart

This grown-up take on preppy styles is led by growing interest from Stitch Fixers in incorporating academia-inspired elements into their wardrobes. Over half (55 percent) of clients said they’re interested in incorporating plaid styles into 2024, with 35 percent trying out varsity jackets and 46 percent taking loafers for a spin.

“Try experimenting with plaid skirts and trousers that can easily be dressed down with a graphic tee while still maintaining a polished, preppy look,” Stephanie Arroyo, Stitch Fix stylist, said.

Everyday Vacay

An evolution of the “Europecore” trend that dominated 2023 will be in full swing for 2024, stylists predicted. Stitch Fix saw more than 77,000 searches for maxi dresses, with 52 percent of clients saying they incorporate their vacation wardrobe—seeing the likes of the seaside or coastal destinations—into their everyday wardrobe. Over 60 percent of stylists said wide-leg pants will become the most popular silhouette, with women prioritizing linen pieces.

Modern Utility

Modern Utility favors earthy hues like sand and green for the rugged-meets-sophisticated man.

“Master this trend by trying Stitch Fix’s ‘three-layer rule,’’ Christie David-Burlotos, Stitch Fix stylist, said. “Start with a neutral tee as your base, add a lightweight sweater over that, then top with an earth-toned sport jacket for a polished finish.”

Just over 30 percent of men’s clients are interested in utility jackets, while commuter pants saw a 670 percent increase in sales. Linen jumped over 200 percent as well.

Revival Style

The fourth key look is inspired by nostalgic styles from the early 2000s, modernized for today.

“Whether you’re after a more utilitarian, street-style approach or looking for an elevated cargo pant that can be dressed up, there’s a style to match everyone’s unique taste,” Stitch Fix stylist Emiko Strah said.

These “boomerang” styles—aka, pieces resurfacing in popularity—include silver jewelry and ballet flats. There’s also increasing demand for the Y2K favorite: cargo pants, which saw a 256 spike in requests.

Sporty-ish

This sport-meets-stylish trend incorporates golf, tennis or pickleball-inspired styles; 15 percent of clients said golf will inspire their fits. And 46 percent of men’s clients said moisture-wicking fabric is the most important performance quality.

“Level-up your look with breathable polos and wrinkle-resistant chinos that can have you ready for a business meeting on or off the golf course,” Ray Carter, Stitch Fix stylist, said.

Texture Play

“If an outfit feels like it’s missing something, ask yourself: Do I have at least two textures present? It’s as easy as it sounds, and they can be subtle, too—that’s the contrast,” said Allison Bornstein, Stitch Fix’s first guest stylist for the 2024 Style Forecast report. “Start with a soft silk blouse or a dress and add hard leather touches for edge and structure.”

Thirty percent of clients look forward to incorporating embroidery into their looks, while 27 percent are excited about faux leather. Stitch Fix’s advice? Do both. At the same time.

Color of the Year

Stitch Fix crowned “Matcha” as the year’s color for 2024. Green shades saw a 60 percent increase in requests, and 60 percent of Stitch Fix stylists recommend pairing a statement matcha piece with neutrals.

“Chanel your inner maximalist and style matcha with other shades of green for a look that will turn heads,” said Mika Harris, Stitch Fix stylist.
