The Modern Way to Dress Girly

Fashion and lifestyle blogger Emily Schuman’s style can best be described as girly-chic. But you won’t find any oversize hair bows or matching sweater sets in her closet. How do we know? Because our favorite wardrobe organizing experts at Finery gave us an exclusive look at Schuman’s go-to style staples. Here are some of her best looks with tips on how to conquer a femme aesthetic, the 2017 way.

Subtle Ruffles

Flouncy details are pretty much the most fun thing to twirl around in (other than tulle gowns, of course). But large layered ruffles run the risk of looking juvenile or adding unnecessary volume where we need it least. Look for strategically placed waves that still offer movement, but in flattering places (like along hem lines, atop pockets or at the ends of sleeves).

Delicate Jewelry

Dainty rings, tiny earrings and elegant layered necklaces are much more ladylike than heavy chains or chunky gemstones. We love how this silver and bronze duo takes a neutral tee and blazer from blah to pretty.

Moody Florals

Flower prints are a staple in every girly girl’s wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean they have to come in pinks and purples. Dark, moody versions are a contemporary update on pastel buds, and easier to integrate into professional, grownup settings.

Modern Bows

Leave the prissy, perfect ones for gift-wrapping; loose, natural looking ribbons are the way to go, even if they’re really just a trompe l’oeil sequin design, like on Schuman’s sweater above.

Less Obvious Pinks

If you identify as girly, chances are you don’t hate pink. But instead of stocking up on predictable hot pink skirts or blush blouses, take the road less traveled and opt for subtler pops of color. Think: Rose colored sunnies, millennial pink mules or a magenta straw bag.

Updated Pencil Skirts

This office-appropriate style is great for showing off (or even creating) curves. Fun touches like rouching, wrap details or flirty prints will keep you from looking stuck in 1952.

Bell Sleeves

Princess puff sleeves should really only be worn by little girls (or women working the Belle circuit at Disney World). The best silhouette to embrace? A wide bell shape, which can make even a menswear-inspired shirt feel mega-feminine in a flash.

Slim-Fit Booties

Step away from the Mary Janes. This season’s trendiest ankle boot is sleek, slim and just as femme as your favorite pumps. Look for styles that fit tight like a sock, then stock up on every color your heart desires. Including pink.
