This Modern $7.7 Million Palm Springs Home Is Bursting With Classic Glitz and Glamor
You’d be forgiven for thinking this Palm Springs property was plucked straight from the 1950s or 1960s, when desert modernism architecture was at its peak. And in some ways, that was intentional.
The residence was built in 2012 by Sean Lockyer of California-based Studio AR&D and is listed for the first time since its creation at $7.69 million with Todd Monaghan and Keith Markovitz of TTK Represents of Compass. Situated on just under one acre in the historic Movie Colony neighborhood, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Palm Springs, the 7,000-square-foot home has four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and two powder rooms across one level. Like your own private sanctuary, the home itself is sequestered behind 20-foot hedges and sprinkled with an array of towering palm trees for the ultimate retreat.

“The goal with this project was to blend modern elegance and iconic mid-century architectural techniques,” says architect Sean Lockyer. “By implementing classic midcentury nods like floor-to-ceiling expanses of glass, aggregate block construction, and a cantilevered steel roofline, the residence is unable to be dated and could easily be misjudged in age.”
The façade features whitewashed blocks accented by concrete slabs and frameless panes of glass walls. The flat steel roof, a key element of desert modernism, makes the home almost disappear into the terrain and the lush landscaping. The interiors are inspired by Hollywood Regency style, with an unapologetically glamorous and eccentric array of furnishings and art that’s reminiscent of Zsa Zsa Gabor’s flamboyant personal style. The pink couches, chairs, and umbrellas match the pops of pink florals in the outdoor flower beds, while gilded frames, walls of mirrors, and glitzy chandeliers add a glitzy femininity to the space. The future buyer, however, can envision the interiors however they wish—and, indeed, without the eye-catching decor, the home is a neutral canvas for creation.
The entrance feels jungle-like, with a landscaped entry that guides you to the front door. Just inside the glass-lined entrance is the open-plan kitchen, which has a massive central eat-in kitchen island, white lacquered cabinetry, and a garden-facing window reminiscent of modern architect William Cody’s signature style. The scored concrete floors, clerestory windows, clean lines, and organic materiality recall the spirit of midcentury-modern architecture. The living and dining rooms are separated by a double-sided floor-to-ceiling fireplace, constructed with the home’s signature white aggregate blocks, and there’s even a dedicated champagne and wine room off the dining area.
Sliding glass doors open from the living room to the incredible backyard, which was inspired by the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel. The verdant backyard has a U-shaped pool, an elevated spa, and a wraparound pool deck for loungers and seating, all of which are surrounded by magnificent, colorful gardens. There’s also an outdoor bar/kitchen and an al fresco living room tucked under a deep roof overhang. The bedrooms occupy an entire wing of the house. A few of them have fireplaces, and each features an en suite bath and direct access to the gardens. The primary suite’s bathroom has a fireplace and freestanding tub. Other highlights include an office, a movie theater, a large motor court, and a four-car garage.
“From the time I walked onto the property, I was struck by the timeless yet contemporary take on modern architecture,” says listing agent Keith Markovitz. “The details, along with the light and space created by long linear architectural lines and gracious volumes and overhangs, are perfect for the desert setting.”
