Model Choi Leung Preaches Self-Compassion During the Pandemic

For our June/July issue’s Where the Heart Is portfolio, celebrities and beauty pros share portraits and thoughts while staying at home during the pandemic. Leung (above, right) is in Brooklyn with daughter Sahara.

As told to Dianna Mazzone.

We live together. We're in a very fortunate place. There's a lot of people that don't have the same resources — like WiFi — in the city. So we have no complaints.

My day-to-day hasn't changed much because I do work from home, doing artwork. At the onset [of social distancing] my big plan was to use this time to create. But it’s more like I’ve gone inwards, just observing feelings and thoughts and reading a lot. I think it's become more [about] absorbing everything that's going in before I actually create.

As New Yorkers, we’ve always been so pressured to do, do, do. But we’re not human doings; we’re human beings. So maybe it’s okay to just be still and cry if you want to, to watch movies if you want to. Don’t pressure yourself.

It’s nice to be able to document these moments [with this photo shoot]. [Behind us are] my drawings with a black line, and then a larger painting that’s in pink. I think [this shot] captured our emotions. There’s a lot of mixed emotions. I just wore a simple, long T-shirt.

Our day-to-day [beauty rituals] are pretty simple. Sahara and I have been making our own face masks. We’ve been doing way more [of that], to feel fresh and replenished. I usually just use organic oils, cleansing the face and moisturizing. And that's been pretty much the same throughout this [time]. It’s important to keep that routine going — doing things that feel good. It’s a very uncertain time and it's nice to just, you know, not give up.
