Model Bryce Anderson on Finding Artistic Inspiration at Home in Nevada

For our June/July issue’s Where the Heart Is portfolio, celebrities and beauty pros share portraits and thoughts while staying at home during the pandemic. Anderson (above) is in Nevada with his parents and Great Dane, Bear (above).

As told to Dianna Mazzone.

I’m at home with my family in Nevada. I was planning a trip for a few days just to see them, but when [social-distancing orders were put in place], I decided to stay. It’s a different lifestyle here. I feel like in New York when you’re making things, there’s so much pressure to try to please people. But here, I’ve just been making things without having to worry about that.

I’ve been reconnecting with all the books and magazines I’ve collected over the years. I poured myself into books and research when I started modeling. I looked at the test shoots I’d been doing, then I looked at images by these big photographers — and I’d wonder how I could do that. I started taking self-portraits to make my book look more like how I wanted, but over the course of a year, it’s turned into my art form.

I see self-portraits more now as a platform for everything that inspires me. None of my self-portraits are of me. I don't want to say they’re characters because I don't think I ever go that far. But it's [channeling] the idea of a type of person, or a movie, or anything that inspires me. This [image] is actually the first self-portrait I’ve taken that’s just…me. I did something very '70s with my makeup. I'm just not a minimalist when it comes to beauty. I think there's something about wearing a lot of makeup, and something about a picture where you look very unreal, that just takes your breath away.

My mom owns maybe one tube of mascara, but I did her makeup too, when we took these photos in the backyard. This was the first time we really bonded in that way. We’ve also been spending a lot of time as a family nursing our dog, Bear. He’s a two-year-old Great Dane, and he’s been having seizures, but he’s doing better now. But he knocked over the camera, like, three times jumping into this shoot.
