If you’ve been in the vicinity of a library (or a kid’s bookshelf) at any point, you’ve definitely heard of Mo Willems. He’s the New York Times bestselling author and illustrator — and Caldecott Honor recipient — who’s responsible for some of today’s most iconic children’s books and series: Knuffle Bunny, Elephant & Piggie, and of course the Pigeon series. If your kids are fans of any of those, you’re in luck — because his newest book, Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Sleigh, was officially released today.

If you’re not familiar with Mo Willems, there’s no better time to get acquainted. His debut book (and the first in the Pigeon series) was Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, which won multiple literary awards. From there, he began the Caldecott Honor-winning Knuffle Bunny series with Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale. And in 2007, he unveiled the first book in the Elephant & Piggie series: Today I Will Fly! But his work isn’t limited to just his series; he’s also had multiple successful single books, too, like the adorable Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed. Prior to that, he was a writer and animator on Sesame Street, winning not one, not two, but six Emmy Awards during his time with the show.
The latest masterpiece in his collection of works is destined to be a holiday classic. The book starts out with, “Hi, I’m Santa. Listen, I’ve got to leave for a little while to wrap some gifts, so can you watch things for me? Thanks. Oh, and remember: don’t let the Pigeon drive the sleigh!” But the Pigeon, of course, definitely wants to drive the sleigh. The spunky and determined bird sweet-talks, petitions, and downright begs … until he realizes that it may not be the fun Christmas adventure he thought it would be.
