Mississauga to hold 'She The North' rally for US Open champion Bianca Andreescu
Bianca Andreescu has emerged as a national icon after becoming the first Canadian to win a US Open singles event, and now her hometown of Mississauga, On., is giving her a hero’s welcome.
The City of Mississauga announced that it will be hosting a rally for the 19-year-old tennis star on Sunday, September 15, after Andreescu defeated 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams on Saturday.
“The City of Mississauga is proud to be welcoming homegrown tennis star, Bianca Andreescu with a She The North rally at Mississauga Celebration Square on Sunday, September 15,” the city’s official website states in a press release.
“The rally will celebrate the recent accomplishments of Bianca Andreescu who became the first Canadian to win a grand slam singles title after winning the U.S. Open last weekend. Andreescu has been a resident, student and athlete in Mississauga and began her career at Mississauga's Ontario Racquet Club.”
Andreescu is a noted die-hard Toronto Raptors fan and her own fans adopted the “She The North” slogan throughout her spectacular summer, which has led to her ascending to the No. 5 spot on the WTA rankings.
A public rally will be held at Mississauga Celebration Square, located near the massive Square One complex. Mayor Bonnie Crombie will then present Andreescu the key to the city, and then the unveiling of Bianca Andreescu Way will cap off the formal portion of the ceremony.
Members of city council will be attendance, and you better believe a legion of newly-inspired Canadian tennis fans will be on hand to celebrate a spectacular accomplishment.
It really has been a championship summer, and there’s nothing quite like a hometown party to cap it all off.
