On September 28, former Today show host Katie Couric announced on Instagram that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. In an essay titled “Why NOT Me?” published on her website, Katie detailed being six months late to her annual mammogram and getting the news earlier this summer on June 21. She underwent a lumpectomy surgery on July 14, which removed a tumor “roughly the size of an olive.” This was followed by a few weeks of radiation that ended this month.

Now, Katie is using this as an opportunity to encourage people to make their health a priority by keeping up with appointments and getting checked each year. “Every two minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. On June 21st, I became one of them,” she wrote on Instagram.

Katie continued: “As we approach #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, I wanted to share my personal story with you all and encourage you to get screened and understand that you may fall into a category of women who needs more than a mammogram.”

Although she’s only opening up now toward the end of her treatment, her husband has shown his support for her unbeknownst to the public. The day of the former broadcast journalist’s cancer diagnosis, she and husband John Moher celebrated their 8th wedding anniversary. In honor of the special occasion, he took to Instagram to share a sweet tribute to her, one we're sure had double meaning after getting the news.

“We will get older among this crowd. The water roars and rumbles down. Just you and me — And the road ahead,” he captioned a candid photo of Katie with Tom Petty's “You and Me” lyrics.

As fans may know, Katie met John through a mutual friend in 2012. The two crossed paths 14 years after Katie’s first husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer in 1998 after a nine-month-long battle. After becoming a single mother to their two young daughters, she was eventually ready to meet someone again.

"What can I say? He had me at hello," Katie told People about their first encounter. Shortly after, the couple got married on June 21, 2014.

“It took me a long time [to marry again], because I loved being married, and I love being married now,” she told the outlet. “And I’m not a solitary person. I like company. And John is so funny. He’s just got this incredibly dry and wry sense of humor, and he doesn’t take himself too seriously. And he’s just fun to be around.”
