It's a big night for Roger Federer and Mirka Federer. The retired tennis champion is one of four co-chairs of the 2023 Met Gala, and he was one of the first celebrities to walk the red carpet. By his side is his wife Mirka:
Here's everything you need to know about Mirka Federer:
She was born in Bojnice, Slovakia (then Czechoslovakia).
She was born Miroslava Vavrincová on April 1, 1978, in Czechoslovakia. At age 2, her family emigrated to Switzerland. She started playing tennis at age 9 after she met Martina Navratilova at a tournament.
She became a professional tennis player in 1993.
Her highest world ranking was 83, in 2000. That same year, she represented Switzerland at the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where she met Roger Federer. In 2002, they played doubles together at the Hopman Cup. Mirka was forced to retire from tennis in 2002 due to a foot injury.
Mirka and Roger started dating at the Summer Olympics.
They would date for nine years before tying the knot in 2009. "Earlier today, in my hometown of Basel, surrounded by a small group of close friends and family, Mirka and I got married. It was a beautiful spring day and an incredibly joyous occasion," Roger announced at the time.
They now have four children: identical twins Charlene and Myla, born in July 2009, and another set of identical twins, Leo and Lenny, born in May 2014.
She's been key in his career.
"She still plays a huge role and has great input and impact," Paul Annacone, Federer’s co-coach, told the New York Times in 2012. "She understands the big picture extremely well and does a great job in terms of letting us work but also shares invaluable information. This is a tricky balance. She’s been there since day one, so she knows very well what it takes and how to get there."
"I think it’s a great help that she actually played," Roger said of Mirka in that same profile. "I never started dating a tennis player because of that, actually, sort of 10 years ahead. But in my situation, I think it really does help, because she knows in some ways what it takes, and she did it on a level that was still very good but not at my level. And she already put in a massive amount of hours herself. So when I tell her, 'Look, I need to go to practice,' she’s the first to say, 'I know, I know you need it, and you need only maybe 20 percent of what I needed.'"
When Roger Federer announced his retirement in September 2022, he specifically thanked Mirka, saying, "She has warmed me up before finals, watched countless matches even while over 8-months pregnant and has endured my goofy side on the road with my team for over 20 year."
