Skincare was an early part of Candace Marino's life. The celebrity aesthetician—known to many as the LA Facialist—grew up admiring the amount of attention and care that her mother put into her own beauty routine before she was finally able to get her first facial as a teenager. From then on, she developed a relationship with her aesthetician that inspired her career as an adult.

"I loved to play spa, give massages, facials, and pedicures," she says. "I loved the idea of making people feel good about themselves and impacting their self-image and health, so after graduating high school, I pursued skin."

For the last 15 years, Marino has worked in nearly every area under the broad umbrella of skincare from hotel day spas to wellness centers to dermatology and plastic surgery offices, but in 2019, she branched out on her own under the name the LA Facialist.

Marino's roster of clients includes Kourtney Kardashian, Miranda Kerr, and Dove Cameron, and when she's not giving them the ultimate glow, you can find her on social media talking all things skincare and giving her followers a look at her own personal routine. Her skincare regimen is tailored to her normal/oily skin. She also suffers from melasma, which causes pigmentation of the skin and can be triggered by sun exposure, heat, and hormones.

"Because there is no cure for melasma, it’s a lifelong battle," Marino says. "I have to be really strict with my skincare routine to suppress the melanocyte activity and keep the pigment from worsening."

Marino keeps her melasma at bay by regularly applying sunscreen and free radical-fighting vitamin C. Read ahead to get a look at several of her go-to products.

Her morning cleanser doubles as a mask.

"I cleanse with the iS Clinical Warming Honey Cleanser. This is a decadent honey-based cleanser that I like to massage on and leave on for a few minutes like a mask."

She follows up with a multitasking toner.

"I love The Essence Exfoliating Toner by Augustinus Bader which is lightly exfoliating and hydrating."

She always applies eye cream before her serum and moisturizer.

"I hear so many times 'my eye cream burns' and it's often because it was applied after an acid product to the face. To avoid getting traces of ingredients under the eyes that aren't meant to be there, I always apply eye products first. I love the Furtuna Skin Eye Revitalizing Cream. The texture is so decadent, it helps to soften any lines around the eyes, and it's a great base if you wear concealer."

Vitamin C is crucial to keeping her skin protected from free radicals.

"I refer to antioxidant serums as the insurance policy for our sunscreen. No matter what, we're still getting UV exposure and vitamin C and antioxidants fight off the damaging free radicals that enter the skin and harm us. I love the SkinBetter Science Alto Defense Serum. It has vitamin C and 17 other antioxidants."

When she's not exposed to the sun, she uses retinol for her melasma.

"The Jan Marini Lumiate Face Lotion is a retinol product with pigment inhibitors, antioxidants, and peptides. Retinol is fine to use during the day as long as you are diligent with SPF and not getting direct sun exposure. I use this daily for my melasma, and I'm not exposed to the sun regularly since I work in a dark room."

Her morning routine ends with not one, but three, sunscreens.

"The iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 is my favorite product on the planet. It's sunscreen in a moisturizing base, plus antioxidant and anti-aging properties. I love this formula and how it makes my skin look and feel. Next, I apply Supergoop! Glowscreen because I love the illuminated effect it gives my skin. Lastly, I apply SkinBetter SunBetter Tone Smart SPF 68, which is a tinted sunscreen that blurs imperfections and is my version of foundation.

I know three sunscreens seems excessive-but the glow screen and the sunbetter are more so to perfect my look without using makeup, although they do provide adequate sun coverage on their own."

Evenings are for triple cleansing.

"I'm obsessed with the fresh Seaberry Skin Nutrition Cleansing Oil. It breaks down makeup and smells amazing. I use the iS Clinical Cleansing Complex as my second cleanse to remove any traces of oil or makeup from the first cleanse. This is also safe for the eye area. I use the Jan Marini Bioglycolic Face Cleanser after drying my face from the second cleanse and massage it on my face. This is mildly resurfacing and helps to deep clean the skin and refine pores."

She ends the day with a soothing mist.

The scent of the Caudalie Beauty Elixir Mist is super calming and is the perfect way to relax before bed. I actually keep this on my bedside table."
