A Minute with Drexel: Coloring outside the lines

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WKRG) — This week, I read an article about the passing of a woman named Carrie Robbins. She was an award-winning Broadway costume designer.

But it wasn’t what she did in her adult life that really caught my attention and imagination. It was something she did as a child.

The article recounted how when Carrie was 3 years old, she was always drawing on her bedroom walls. Her parents were concerned about that and took her to a doctor who said… enroll her in art classes!

Well, they did, and look where it led her… all the way to Broadway and multiple awards for her artistic costume design.

That got me to thinking.

How many times have we stifled the creative desires in our hearts because someone else thought we were “coloring outside the lines,” so to speak?

How many times have we stifled other choices because those choices didn’t fit in our tidy little box of life?

Obviously, I’m not talking about choices that might lead to someone’s harm. Rather, I’m talking about those that might lead to someone’s happiness.

This week, let’s think about those things we would like to do if we knew we could not fail.

Maybe you want to learn ballroom dancing or a new sport.

Maybe you want to write a book, take singing lessons, start a podcast, go back to school.

Maybe you want to color…but if you color on the walls, don’t say I gave you permission!

Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”

Pray about whatever it is that you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t because of fear, or age, or the expectations and limitations that others sometimes put on us.

Maybe that “one thing” we like to do, that others think is a little odd, will turn out to be the one thing that brings us the most joy.

I think I’m going to grab a box of crayons and do some coloring!
