Minecraft's 2023 Mob Vote Is Between Crabs, Armadillos, and Penguins

Minecraft Mob Vote 2023

Minecraft Live – Mojang’s annual livestream event where they outline the future of everybody’s favorite block game – is almost upon us, starting on October 15, 2023. As has been tradition since 2017, it comes with a community vote on a new mob that will be added to the game in the next year or so.

The winners of past votes have included the Phantom, the Glow Squid, the Allay, and the Sniffer, and now the 2023 lineup has been announced. Rather than fantastical mobs like previous votes, this one is a choice between three real-world animals. We found out first that crabs could be coming to Minecraft, and then armadillos and penguins were announced in the following days.

As always, some extra features around each mob have been announced, so we get some idea of their utility in the game: Crabs spawn in Mangrove Swamp biomes, and their claws can be harvested and used to extend a player’s reach. Armadillos spawn in hot biomes like Savannas and can drop Scute, which you can craft into armor for your dogs. Penguins spawn on Stony Shores and can offer a buff that makes your boat move quicker, similar to how dolphins increase your swimming speed.

These benefits are all nice, but ultimately fairly small, so most people will likely just vote for which one they think is the cutest. In the GLHF offices, we did a quick poll and the penguins won in a landslide, so we’ll see if the Minecraft community at large feels the same way.

Voting for this event opens on October 13 at 1pm EDT and ends 48 hours later, at the start of the Minecraft Live stream.
