Mindy Kaling Says She Feels Most Beautiful in Sweatpants—& Glitter

In this episode of Style Sessions, Mindy Kaling tells Yahoo Style contributor Sophie Tweed-Simmons that even though there weren’t many people who looked like her on TV while she was growing up—let alone writing, directing, or producing—she knew what she wanted and went after it.

And thank god the 36-year-old  Indian-American actress trusted her gut. The force behind two television hits—The Office and The Mindy Project—and a New York Times Bestseller, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Kaling is readying to release her follow up book, Why Not Me?, on September 15th.

Kaling, who kicked off her career as the only woman out of ten writers on The Office, tells Tweed-Simmons that it was nice to feel like “part of the gang and to be able to complain about the boss.” Laughing, Kaling adds, “I feel like you can bond over that. When you are the boss, you know that you are the person you’re bonding over.”

Though she delights in the high-low aspect of playing a character who’s both funny and loves fashion—her character on The Mindy Project, Mindy Lahiri, wears a lot of custom clothing—Kaling says she feels most beautiful when dressed down.

“I think the prettiest I look or the most happy I am is when I change out of my costume at work and put on my more comfortable clothes,” says Kaling, who cops to having 20 different gray shirts, 12 pairs of black pants, and dozens of sneakers and flats. But that’s not to say she doesn’t enjoy dressing up. “I also feel really nice when I’m covered in makeup and glitter and sparkles wearing a tight, hot dress. I feel good when I wear that, too.”
