Mindy Kaling is finally giving us the Legally Blonde 3 update we’ve all been waiting for.

While appearing on the Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, The Mindy Project alum, 44, shared some insight into why the third installment is taking so long to finish. “Obviously, now we sort of have pencils down because of the writer’s strike,” Kaling admitted.

Though Kaling reassured fans Legally Blonde 3 is still happening (phew!), the writer and producer explained why the writing process has been on the slow end. The Office star admitted that she feels a lot of pressure to co-write the latest addition to the beloved franchise.

“I think it’s a challenging project because of what makes it so great,” Kaling explained. “Elle Woods is like Reese [Witherspoon’s] Avengers character, and people feel so passionately about this.”

She added, “I’m just someone who's coming in to co-write the third movie, and even I see how excited people are. And what is Elle Woods doing in 2023 or 2024 when culture has changed so much since then? And so that’s tricky as a writer—[which is] writing something that is incredibly funny and is a great role for Reese but is saying something about feminism now.”

It’s been a while since Kaling has shared updates about Legally Blonde 3. The last time we can recall hearing news about the latest installment was back in August 2022, when star and producer Reese Witherspoon exclusively sat down with USA Today.

At the time, the Legally Blonde actress told the outlet that she received some much-need inspiration for the project—and it was all thanks to the box-office success of Top Gun: Maverick.

“I’m still hoping that Legally Blonde 3 is gonna come together in the right way,” Witherspoon told the publication. “It’s just like Top Gun. They waited a long time to make another version of that movie, and I loved the nostalgia piece they incorporated in it.”

The mother of three continued, “So definitely that gave us a lot of inspiration about what we would want to do with Elle Woods and make sure that we had all those same touchstones that mattered to people [back] then.”

We’ll be sure to keep our eyes peeled for more Legally Blonde 3 updates.
