Milly RTW Fall 2018

Michelle Smith is radiating positivity. Ahead of her fall runway, the designer, dressed in a fluorescent pink strapless dress with a side knot from the fall lineup, explained how excited she was for people to see her exploration of color and the powerful meaning each one projects. “Every color has its own property and quality and psychological meaning,” she said. “You feel it. You vibrate the meaning of that color when you’re wearing it.”

Models came out in one energetic monochromatic look after the next. The brightest hues had the greatest impact. A tailored red coat over matching dress elicited power; a pink faux fur coat evoked love, and a yellow coat rang with energy and optimism. A chic yellow turtleneck was styled with a long skirt with iridescent paillettes that incorporated every color. Boxy tailoring lent a gender-fluid undertone, as did a shimmery silver sweater and oversized burgundy puffer. A thread of minimalism flowed through the design, elevated by the diverse textured weights of luxurious fabrics.

The collection held a resounding message of vibrancy, strength and a desire for equality: For the finale, the models, wearing a rainbow of hues, stood in a show of solidarity. During a polarized political environment, it’s a nice reminder that fashion has the capacity to react in a positive way.
